The Nose That Knows

Queen Henderson can smell oil-spill-related pollution on certain Penn Cove mussels, so you shall not be eating them.

I love that NOAA has a team trained to do this, and that they flew them up from the Gulf to help us out. I have to say, the Seattle Times did a really good job covering the Penn Cove boat fire and sinking. Their piece the other day on the history of the boat owner was terrific reporting, just a great story.

Yah, I read Fairview Fannie's piece on the sinking too and agree it was well-written.

I would like to know, since the taxpayers will be paying the millions rewuired for the cleanup, what is the boat owner's political bent. If he is the least bit conservative or full-blown teanagger or anywhere in between he should be tied to that hulk when they scuttle it.

I was completely prepared to find out that Queen Henderson was a Labrador or maybe a bloodhound. I even hoped for a cute puppy photo.

So disappointed.

I cannot BELIEVE that that guy is getting away with this crap. Over and over and over he dumps poisonous crap in the water and buries it in the land -- oftentimes land that isn't even his -- and the worst they can do is fine him a grand here, a grand there -- and he never pays. Now he's illegally parked his rotting boat in Penn Cove, after being told not to; refused to move it over and over, watched as the stupid thing burned and sank, and destroyed a million-dollar industry plus one of the most threatened landscapes in the country.

RUGGED BOOTSTRAPPY PIONEERISM and all the other excuses Washingtonians use to celebrate (or at least to pat themselves on the back for tolerating) grossly antisocial and destructive behavior.

It's not unrelated to the phenomenon of Seattleites feeling morally righteous for their "live and let live" attitude toward downtown drug addicts... no matter how disruptive and wasteful it is to shut down 3rd and Virginia three times daily with firetrucks and ambulances when those addicts overdose.

It's not unrelated to the "free speech purists" on Slog who defended creepy guys getting off by watching porn on the SPL's most visible computers.

It follows that a state deprived of logic or any notion of "public good" will deprive itself of the ability to prevent or admonish behavior that is detrimental to that public good.
