Everybody's Talking About Mitt Romney, but Not in the Way That Mitt Romney Wants

Posted by on Wed, May 30, 2012 at 11:14 AM

The Romney campaign has released a video celebrating last night's Texas win, which gave Romney more than enough delegates to secure the Republican nomination:

It's a weird video, full of hopeful imagery but narrated by Romney with language about failure and exhaustion. It reminds us that Romney has not yet managed to provide an alternative to Barack Obama's policies; he's only talked about how terrible things are now, but he hasn't been able to get very specific about what Mitt Romney's America will look like. And the worst thing for the Romney campaign is that nobody is talking about Romney's big win last night. They're talking about this:

They're talking about how Romney can't say no to Trump, because Trump has money. The Romney team isn't helping: Consider this accidental photo opportunity from yesterday (thanks to Slog tipper Gale for the link) that made Romney appear to be sponsored by Donald Trump. And maybe most of all, people are talking about Rmoney's Amercia. This isn't directly Mitt Romney's fault, of course, but it lends his whole campaign an air of ineffectuality.

The most important thing a campaign can do is get their messaging across. The Romney campaign is failing in their most important duty in two important ways: They can't keep the media focused on what they're trying to say, and what they're trying to say isn't effective. The fact that Romney can't seem to make his team do their jobs is especially problematic, because now that Romney is the official candidate, the RNC party goons are going to swarm in with their own ideas of what the campaign should be doing. If Romney can't merge the party with his campaign, this messaging problem is only going to get worse.

He finds himself in a place where his wealth can only help him so much. So he becomes helpless.

He may have been able to buy his way to the nomination (only due to the incredibly weak field), but he can not fully buy his way to the presidency.

His ineffectiveness as a leader is on display for all to see.

I must say true enough Paul, but there is still enough time for Romney to clean house, focus, and project his vision. After all, he remains a flip flopping moderate Rockefeller type Republican that most Americans will welcome after Obama. Should be easy for the right savvy campaign manager to fix this one.

@2 except he's not creating nor attempting to create that persona. He has been courting the nutter fringe of the right. If he continues (which I believe he will), it'll be way too easy to show him as the flip flopper he is.

On the bright side, he's heading toward making the Gore campaign the 4th worst in recent memory (currently 3rd behind Kerry (2nd) & McCain (1st)).

Is Mitt Romney that politician in The Dead Zone - a good-looking, nuclear hawk who turns out to be a chicken-shit wimp?

He pretty much knew he was going to be the Republican nominee as long by keeping a low profile while all the crazies rattled off their 9, 9, 9 gooble gobble. I think he’s aware that a similar tactic can get him real close to the White House. He’ll never be anything other than awkward when talking to people. If Romni limits his exposure and lets FOX do most of the leg work he has a pretty decent chance, to my dismay.

Still, Trump gets props for best photo-bomb/product-placement coup, simply by having some of his people move and park one of his planes, at one of the airports at which he owns a hanger or two.

@4, maybe I'm older than you, but the campaign that makes me cringe the most when I think back on it was the Dukakis campaign. Christ, what a train wreck that was.
