Obama Is not a Big Spender

Posted by on Thu, May 24, 2012 at 9:16 AM

This is based something that Romney is not familiar with: hard facts.

Of all the falsehoods told about President Barack Obama, the biggest whopper is the one about his reckless spending spree.

As would-be president Mitt Romney tells it: “I will lead us out of this debt and spending inferno.”

Almost everyone believes that Obama has presided over a massive increase in federal spending, an “inferno” of spending that threatens our jobs, our businesses and our children’s future. Even Democrats seem to think it’s true.

...In the 2009 fiscal year — the last of George W. Bush’s presidency — federal spending rose by 17.9% from $2.98 trillion to $3.52 trillion. Check the official numbers at the Office of Management and Budget.

The big surge in federal spending happened in fiscal 2009, before Obama took office. Since then, spending growth has been relatively flat.

....Over Obama’s four budget years, federal spending is on track to rise from $3.52 trillion to $3.58 trillion, an annualized increase of just 0.4%.

Is this business of making shit up a Mormon thing?

Is their any negative consequence to lying in American politics? Especially on the right.

To answer your last question: no, really more of a politician thing. Obama told lies on his road to the white house too, although not with quite the same gleeful abandonment.

However, defrauding and lying to taxpayers is kind of an old school Mormon thing.

Read it, another great book from Krakauer.

Romney is promising 6% unemployment today. Talking about an empty promise and problems with numbers.

Well, the religion was founded based solely on the made up shit of a professional con man, so I'd say yes (though obviously it's not exclusive to Mormons). The amazing thing about both Joseph Smith and Mitt Romney is that anybody buys their shit.

@2 - that was one of my main takeaways from Krakauer's book: it's a fundamental tenet of Mormon faith that it's okay to lie for the Lord.

Obama didn't crank the car up to 110 MPH. He merely took it from there to 120. It's still a "reckless spending spree".

Good Morning Charles,
@2 Theodore G. said it best. It isn't a Mormon thing. It's political. All sides do it to a variant degree. BTW, I don't like anymore than you. It's the political nature of the beast. It reminds me of something Michael Kingsley once remarked "A gaffe in Washington is when a politician accidentally tells the truth." I think that's verbatim.

Awww! @3 is cute, countering actual facts with "everybody knows". So adorable!

@7, for your analogy to be accurate, you'd have to say he took the car from 110 to just under 112. That's just math.

Fritz @7 has posted the cliffs notes version of the Republican rebuttal to this argument. Romney would simply and correctly agree that Bush was ALSO reckless and irresponsible in making spending decisions. Don't we love exposing a liar? Problem is, you'll never un-ring a bell. I would suggest exposing Romney's deeds rather than his words. Dog on roof better than flip-flopping on healthcare, BAIN capital better than "I'll bet you ten thou".

Federal Spending Flattens in Obama Administration

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/05/23…

By the by, saying "both sides do it" doesn't reflect the reality: Republicans lie more and have their lies magnified by 10,000 with their mighty Fox News claghorn, lies that the other news programs fell compelled to repeat.

No, it's a black thing... jk.

But seriously, why is it ok to mormon bash? I'm not religious, but I still think mormon bashing is the same as jew bashing, black bashing, or gay bashing...

All politicians are liars. Almost all of them are phony too.

But the reason Romney's a bad politician is that he can't hide his phoniness.

Obama is great at hiding his phoniness. Santorum and Paul are good at it too. Newt not so much. But Romney absolutely sucks at it. He shines with fakeness.

@7, you are willfully ignoring what you're seeing in front of your face.

Obama hasn't "cranked it up to 120". Under Obama, spending is increasing at the SLOWEST RATE IN FIFTY YEARS: slower than Bush, slower than Reagan, slower even than Herbert Hoover.

The current level of spending is BUSH -- ALL BUSH (and his predecessors). Obama's spending as a percentage of GDP is GOING DOWN, NOT UP.

Maybe you're the kind of person who responds better to a graph -- I know I am. Look at these graphs, from that notorious hotbed of Communism, the Wall Street Journal:

It's pretty staggering how little spending has grown, given that we've been in a recession/non-recovery for nearly four years. Government spending always goes up during recessions because that's when people need government services the most. But right-wing orthodoxy demands that we eat the poor instead.

The past 30 years have proven that Democrats belong to the party of fiscal responsibility while Republicans explode spending and national debt. How many times must the cycle repeat before Americans stop eating up right-wing lies?

@14: why is it OK to scientology bash?

in the abstract, of course, all faith must be respected, and no one faith is crazier than any other.

mormonism, like scientology, is fresh enough that seeing behind the curtain is easy - it is patent BS, but it sure makes shiny, vice-free, baby-factory white people.

I'm afraid the post you quote is playing misleading games with fiscal years. If you look at quarterly outlays (http://research.stlouisfed.org/fredgraph…), you will see that the big jump occured from the Jan-Mar 2009 quarter to the Apr-Jun 2009 quarter. Obama became president in Jan 2009. Because of the government's Sep-to-Sep fiscal year, the jump happens to fall in a fiscal year that began on Bush's watch. You can certainly blame Bush's policies if you like, but there is no question that Obama was the president when the increase happened.

@22 - The article expressly addresses that matter, rather than playing games. The budget for the first 9 months of the Obama presidency was put into effect by the Bush administration. The only significant change Obama's policies made to the existing budget was to authorize the stimulous spending, and so the article's author applied that increased money to Obama, not Bush.

Obama's budget would have gone into effect for the 4th quarter of 2009, which your graph shows as significantly lower growth.

This post is taken from Rex Nutting's article over at Market watch. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/obama-s…

All Nutting prooves is the rate at which spending increased under obama is lower. His own chart shows that each year obama has indeed spent more than even the highest spending year under Bush. All nutting is saying is that spending under obama has fluxuated less. He is still the highest spending president.

Obama is a narcissistic, pathological liar. If his Compare where our country was 3 years ago, to where we are now?

Either the man is the most inept and incompetent U.S. president in history or he’s a puppet ruler, and his puppeteers’ goal is to bring down the United States and destroy the American way of life of which our country was founded… and which all of us, conservatives, liberals, and independents enjoy.

Every decision that has been made from the time Obama took office until now has served that purpose, has it not?

Obama doesn’t want to shrink the deficit, or stop government expansion, or decrease government entitlements, or tap into our vast oil resources to reduce dependency on oil from hostile sources, or pass legislation that would encourage private sector growth, and the jobs that would accompany it...

No, instead, Obama (and Soros and his radical MiddleEast financial backers) want unemployment and entitlement rolls to keep rising… the more people dependent on the federal government for subsistence, the more votes for
Obama and the liberal progressive movement… (This also accelerates the realization of Islamist radicals objective of destroying America.)

This has gone way beyond partisan politics... Democrat, Republican, Liberal,
Conservative, or Independent... we're all Americans. And if we all don't pull together to oust the Obama administration in 2012, we'll lose our American way of life forever... and it won't be long before the United States will cease to exist.

Democrats had control of both houses of Congress from 2006 until now... But despite that fact, the federal debt has increased $5.1 trillion dollars since Obama took office.

And, Obama and his Congress has refused to balance the budget since he took office too.

You use clever accounting tricks, but they don't hide the fact that Obama has spent more than any president in the history of the United States... and with nothing to show for it!!

By every measure, the Obama administration has been an utter failure. Democrats are jumping his ship at a record pace.

It's fine to have a different point of view... but for god sakes... we're all Americans. And as Americans, can't we all agree that this country that Obama, and the people he's gathered around him... their policies are destroying America.

Obama is a charismatic bullshitter... the guy has no clue how to govern, or how to select qualified people to assist him...

Obama record by every measure is an abysmal failure... It's so bad that Obama doesn't even talk about anything he's done when he gives campaign speeches !!

Listen to the crap he talks about... they're all just distractions to keep people from thinking about all of his failures... taxing the rich, birth control, Republicans war on women (how stupid is that?)...

Has anybody heard Obama talk about what he's going to do to create jobs? Decrease our dependency on foreign oil? Ensure the safety of our country and its citizens? Reduce the debt?

Has anybody heard Obama lay out a... any plan for the future?
