Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father

Posted by on Mon, May 21, 2012 at 4:04 PM

They seem terribly concerned for the health and safety of their child—but only after the washing machine starts. (Via The New Civil Rights Movement.)

Bewilderingly stupid.

Does anyone know if the kid is okay??!

How did they think this would be funny, even without the near tragedy? Fortunately, the child survived with only minor bruising.

Here is the thing that disturbs me. A Google News search found articles that say happened on May 11. No article mentions whether the police got called, whether there was a child welfare visit, or if there was any other investigation. Hopefully we will find out that some agency has looked into whether the kids live in a safe home.

They're clearly freaking out as soon as they realize the door won't open. (And, why, why, why, don't those stupid things have an emergency stop? Forget idiots trying to win Darwin awards, it'd totally be worth the $5 or so those take if you spotted a red sock in your whites)

As for why the dad put the kid in there, my guess is "jump out and scare mommy!"

So, when you launder your kid should you use Tide or Cheer?

Oh pssh. Who HASN'T played with washing machines. They obviously didn't know it would lock and start the second it was closed. Thank goodness the kid's all right.

You just know that next year's washing machines are now going to come with a new safety label...

"Don't put children in washing machine. Injury may occur."

@10, I'm right there puking with you. holy christ.

I would have been looking for the fire ax to break the window of the machine. Then again, I would have been acting as a bystander, because I'M NOT STUPID ENOUGH TO PUT MY CHILD INTO A FUCKING WASHING MACHINE.

"Dad goofs around with son at the laundromat to help him fight boredom. Looks appropriately horrified and panicked when the machine starts without him pressing a button, and he finds the door locked." I don't find this as outraging as apparently everyone else, but then I'm no parent.

Whatever. It would have been worse if they were a gay couple, not doing this.

@16 i dont know if you have ever been to a laundry mat but its pretty standard that you cant open them that way people are not pulling your clothes out and putting theirs in so they dont have to pay or even stealing your clothes. At least that my experience in philly

@14,

It's been a while since I took note of the warning labels on a washing machine, but I'm pretty sure they do already have a warning to that effect, something like "do not play in or on" and "don't put limbs inside while in operation". Humans are even stupider than attorneys can anticipate.

Oh, boy. Where do you start?

I'm tempted to say that some people shouldn't have kids, but they weren't being malicious or neglectful. They were just being mega-stupid (which is almost as bad). It's an innocent mistake. I wonder if high schools should have parenting classes. "Please don't stick your child inside machinery. Know and follow the warning labels."

Honestly, those parents don't seem that irresponsible to me. In retrospect, yeah, bad idea. But the washing machines that most people grew up with don't lock shut, so it probably didn't occur to them that this could happen. They were clearly clowning around with the kid, doing a "hey, cut kid in washer" moment, and got unlucky (OK, a little stupid). But once the washer started, I don't really know what they could have done better. Also, gold star to that attendant, who seemed to get the job done in a hurry.

It was all harmless fun until they closed the door. Even without the possibility of the machine starting, shutting a kid in there is dangerous and a good way to traumatize the tyke.

Yeah. What the hell. You should only put a kid in the top-loading kind.

My mother used the laundromat when I was young. One time my brother and I were fooling around trying to find something to help our bordem. My brother told me to stick my head in the dryer and take a good smell. Well, that machine turned out to be a special dry-cleaning model and I got a huge whiff of dry-cleaning chemicals. That was the first time I got high (I guess...it bascially knocked me out).

What. the. fuck.

I don't really see how this is more acceptable than a parent "playfully" allowing their kid to put their hand into a blender or garbage disposal.

As a child, it would have never crossed my mind to get into a comparatively giant machine which could potentially drown me. I basically retained two things growing up: women can do anything men can do, and don't trust machines. Because I had a good mom. And this is not an example of good parenting. It's idiocy and carelessness at a staggering level.

I do hope it is fake, because if not, that poor kid doesn't have a chance.

I can easily imagine not knowing that the door would lock. I had no idea. It's a scary accident but I think saying that these are "BAD PARENTS" is a bit off base.

Washing machines that lock don't unlock until a cycle is finished, and don't start tumbling or washing unless money is paid and 'start' is depressed. Dryers often restart automatically if a cycle is still in progress and the door has been opened and then closed, so this is definitely a dryer. But it begs the question then of how someone was able to open the dryer part-way through the cycle and take out their clothes and leave it open if the dryer locks and can't be opened while it's in operation.

This was obviously the father's attempt at being cute, and it was stupid and careless.

Some updates that might be of interest:

* The kid is fine. He was taken to a hospital immediately following the incident and checked out.
* The two adults with him are not his parents, they are his babysitter and her boyfriend.
* No criminal charges are being filed in the case. Both the police and child welfare authorities have investigated and found no evidence for anything other than an overwhelming case of stupidity.
