At Large / Housekeeping Eli's in New York

...picking up that prize he won, looking very spiffy at Columbia University's Low Library. He is accompanied by our publisher and spirit animal Tim Keck, some guy with a giant head (pictured—hope he doesn't bite)*, and his mom (AWWWWWWWWW!!!).
We expect video of his surely eloquent acceptance plus a report on the luncheon menu later.
*Paul Constant and I have exhausted our reportorial skills trying to figure out who that is. Do you know?

Congrats to the Stranger as a whole, actually. When an article is this good, it probably means that Eli had coworkers discussing it with them, an editor's input, etc. as well. Great work seldom happens in a vacuum.

There's a kind of smile that my father would call 'a shit eating grin' -- some people mistake that gross description as smug or obnoxious, but he always meant it in a different way -- as the kind of smile you can give when you're feeling pretty good -- so good that there's not any malice or attitude behind it, you're not smiling to prove your happy or your worth.
That is definitely a shit eating grin (even if that wasn't Eli's intention.) And well deserved one at that.

@6 - Low Library isn't actually a library. It's an administrative building named after Alfred Library. It's quite a low building, hence the name. I'd guess that the statue is of Alfred Library.

I was in Low Library this afternoon and remembered to look for this bust --- it's of Grayson Kirk, the president of Columbia University from 1953 - 1969.
