The black mayor, Cory Booker, of New Jersey's largest city, Newark, spells it out exactly: Gay rights are not a political issue, or something for democracy to sort out. Those rights are supposed to be imposed without any public participation or concerns. Those rights are not a matter of your or my opinion. It is even an insult to allow the public to vote about the rights of fellow human beings.

The governor of New Jersey and the mayor of Newark are night and day.
