Mayor Cory Booker on Gay Rights

Posted by on Tue, May 15, 2012 at 7:51 AM

The black mayor, Cory Booker, of New Jersey's largest city, Newark, spells it out exactly: Gay rights are not a political issue, or something for democracy to sort out. Those rights are supposed to be imposed without any public participation or concerns. Those rights are not a matter of your or my opinion. It is even an insult to allow the public to vote about the rights of fellow human beings.

The governor of New Jersey and the mayor of Newark are night and day.

Cory Booker is the shit. When he isn't running into a burning down house to save a neighbor, he states gay rights in most blunt and direct manner possible. I have a lot of hope for his political future.

Love this guy. But he's so good, I worry that he's too good to be true. It's like a scandal is just waiting to happen. (see Edwards, John) GAH I hope he's as good as he seems!

Republicans think religious fanatics should decide who has civil rights. This is known as insanity and historically unsustainable. But it is politically expedient. And Republicans would sell their mothers to get elected. In fact, they'd sell their mother's, sister's and daughter's lives to get elected.

Fans of Booker should find/download/watch Street Fight, a documentary about his first (unsuccessful) run for mayor of Newark. It gives you a pretty good sense of where he's coming from.

@7, I missed it in January and am glad to have seen it now. And I'm with @8 about there being no such thing as posting it too much.

Damn! The man stands up for what he believes! No equivocation! No "Let the states decide" bullshit! He says "This is right and it should be done now!" Wish we had a president like that! If I was condemned to live in NJ, he would have my vote!

@8 & @9 - Actually, they posted here 3 weeks ago, possible also prior to that. The video is from January.

I agree that it's awesome, and said so in a previous post.

I was just pointing out another case where the staff don't even read their own site, or are just rehashing and hoping no one notices.

CORY BOOKER FOR PRESIDENT 2016!

It's a sop to people who only think about one issue. Of course gay marriage is a human right. But Corey is protecting the interests of the greedy Wall Street interests, and he keeps his left flank covered by advocating what is, after all, a popular issue among young people and superficial liberals. So he's right, yes, but for the wrong reasons, and bad one at that!

Booker flows with the times. He is self seeking. I remember hearing something about his antigay stance during his stanford days but all record of it seems to be missing. Btw if you are not over 40 then you wouldnt know so save the comments for those who might remember this. Although it is nice to think cory booker believes what he says history proves poiticians are self seeking creatures and newark still sucks just as much as it did before booker ever came onto the scene. What exactly has he accompllished?
