Al Jazeera has just learned this hard and old truth:

Al Jazeera English has closed its bureau in Beijing after the Chinese authorities refused to renew its correspondent's press credentials and visa, or allow a replacement journalist.

The channel expressed its disappointment at the situation and said it would continue to request a presence in China.

China is not the future of capitalism, as the Slovenian philosopher Zizek often suggests (with Singaporean capitalism as something like the second stage after European liberal capitalism); it's just capitalism operating with whats socially, geographically, culturally, historically available. What the Canadian Hegelian Charles Taylor pointed out in his book Modern Social Imaginaries (there are multiple modernities, not just one—Europe's) is true for capitalism. It has many modes (welfare state capitalism, the market capitalism, the mafia capitalism, stateless capitalism, and so on), many ways to reach the same end: the extraction and privatization of surplus value.
