Deluxe Junk Evicted?!

Posted by on Fri, Apr 20, 2012 at 5:01 PM

IMG_4176.jpg

Slog tipper Chris reports that Deluxe Junk, one of the last old-school businesses left in Fremont, got its 60-day eviction notice today. This really bums me out, I have found some great treasures in its warrens and back rooms. I also have long appreciated its funky aesthetic and attitude, and what it adds to the great feeling of Fremont. Does anyone know the full story?

I just bought Mr. B0t's birthday gift here and am sad to hear it's closing. The owner was super nice.

I'd be interested in hearing what happened especially with such a randomly written note.

I heard Bauhaus is opening there soon, along with Wall of Sound and Spine & Crown.

So sorry about Deluxe Junk. I'm very glad they were able to last so long. I wonder if the Doric Lodge is in financial trouble? They've been pretty good Fremont neighbors for ages, no?

A tiny bit more on their Facebook page:

"Hi everyone. . Deluxe is going through some trying times these days. It appears our new landlords want us out. I guess being a tenant for 34 years means little to these upstarts. We would be pretty sad if we have to go and I know you would be too. We are not sure where we stand at the moment as there is no communication forthwith coming from the upstarts.

Our landlords are the Doric Lodge Number 92. This is an old fraternity which we have had a very good relationship until now. A few upstarts have joined the fraternity and are bullying us to leave.

We need your help. Contact us at deluxejunk@comcast.net and we will give you updates and how you can help us. Long Live Junk"

Good lord, I think I probably went in there the first time 34 years ago. I've bought many things there, most ridiculously a bar shaped like a boat, around which I designed our entire den to resemble a tiki bar complete with grass ceiling. After a couple of years of that, Mrs. Fnarf gently cleared her throat, and that was the end....

"To most, Fremont is, at worst, littered vacant lots, weathered plywood with torn fliers flapping in the wind, peeling paint and a giant disposal-service complex; at best, businesses with such quaint names as Quietman Antiques, Fat City Tavern, Shaw Island Fleece Co., Fremont Architectural Pottery and a place called, simply, Deluxe Junk."

Its very easy to see that the person whom is responsible for this is malevolent and is clouding the Doric Lodge #92's judgement. Why would this happen after 34 years of business? Deluxe junk is a Seattle icon. People go to Fremont specifically to check out Deluxe Junk. They are in guide books!
Don't worry Fremont the Doric Lodge #92 will make sure the space is filled with another coffee shop, bla bla bla store or bar
Deluxe Junk is not the only one to feel the wrath of Doric Lodge #92's Management team. Kimberly Baker's jewelery shop was broken into by them, then she got kicked out....
way to really show how much the community of Fremont means to you...

There is an all caps update on Delux Junks Facebook page asking to reach out to the Masonic Grand Lodge in Tacoma.

The Doric Lodge No 92 (their landlords) gave Delux Junk 60 days to vacate yesterday. Delux Junk's owner claims to have been harassed by some new Masons members:
"AS WE MENTIONED BEFORE SOME UPSTARTS HAVE JOINED THE LODGE AND WANT US OUT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,GREED I SUPPOSE. SO UNLIKE THE MASONIC ORDER AND IT`S CREED OF HELPING THE COMMUNITY.THESE FEW GUYS ARE FORCING US OUT AND BASTARDISING THE RULES AND CREDO OF THE MASONS."

The Grand Secretary of the Masonic Grand Lodge is R.W.David P. Owen and is "a nice fella" according to the update. His bio states: "Ghost Buster with the emphasis on Buster. Consider me the go-to guy in the middle. I work for everyone. Please don't tell my wife."

You can email him here: grandsecretary@freemason-wa.org to let him know how Fremont's Doric Lodge No 92. will be taking away a beloved Seattle icon with this eviction.

I grew up in Fremont, to preface this.

The guy who runs wright bros is a fucking penis who thinks he runs the best bike shop in the world. But, one of the guys who runs deluxe junk is also a dick. I remember hearing they owned that building, but I guess not.

There were always little cockfights between the Fremont business owners, the arts council, Suzy Burke(and her kids!) and everyone else. This will probably blow over, it's not news. Itll blow my mind if they actually get kicked out.

The fact that Fremont is going to shit, and becoming a faceless bland wall is true though.

This is my letter to the Doric Lodge, I recieved an answer that my information is inaccurate. I wrote back asking what their plans for the community are and they have not answered. I do not believe that people who are older in years and experience and have served as mentors for there community should be kicked out to make way for - what? Please answer my question.

Dear RW David P Owen,

I am a second generation Washingtonian. I am extremely distressed to see yet another historic landmark, Deluxe Junk in Freemont is being taken away in the name of greed. I am looking at your History page on your website and I am stunned that you have so little regard for your community after reading your idea of "Vision". My grandfather Oagie Enwall immigrated to this country from Denmark in 1920. He moved to Eatonville Washington and slowly through extremely hard work built his own dairy farm. He sent me and all his grandchildren to college. He was a member of the Elks and many other organizations and well respected in his community.

My point,

I go to Deluxe Junk not just to shop because it reminds me of my childhood. It has local memorabilia that reminds me of growing up in Washington State and living in Seattle. I have watched as buildings go down to become sterile, money making pieces of crap and I am tired it. Seattle has an amazing history and it gets knocked away by contractors to make a buck. How is this making you "better men"? I understand the need to make money, to support your families. But this sort of enterprise strikes me as short sighted. If you take everything away that makes Freemont a cultural, lively, caring community you will attract only short term goals that profit the few and hurt the majority and the children you leave behind.. If this is your goal it is accomplished.

Please reconsider your damaging decision.

Sincerely

Allison Agostinelli

Why don't you list the months of abuse and coersion, lies and intimidation meted out by you and some members of your lodge? Why don't you mention the broken leases admitted by Charles himself in phone message left to Deluxe? sorry that you "ONLY broke it twice!" not the three times Deluxe accused. Why leave out your petty vindictive struggle over a dumpster? And Did you forget to mention your early morning gardening project of cutting down part of the shrubbery along the front of the building CHARLES AND FLUNKY? You should also tell us about How you took Kim Baker's space out of Deluxe's lease, raised the rent then when MEMBERS OF THE LODGE WANTED THE SPACE FOR RETAIL FOR THEIR OWN BUSINESS!! ( look out for hipster pussy steam punk wanna bes opening some shit hole in her space soon!) pressured Kim to a longer lease and no notice as to end of lease? Why not have a chat about the parking spaces along side the lodge that is in Deluxe's lease which was taken by the lodge to sell christmas trees by A MEMBER OF THE LODGE?!! who then during the xmas season left it chained up and fucked Tom and David out of parking? And lets not forget about Bridgette and Loving from the oven who you unceremoniously kicked out of your kitchen (she rented upstairs kitchen for a small catering co.) where is she?
Don't pretend do be something that you are not. don't pretend that you are acting in honor or have a shred of dignity.I can only hope that there is such things as Dharma and Kharma and that you enjoy a fleeting glimpse of a two ton shit hammer just before it comes raining down upon you.

Deluxe Junk is a landmark in Fremont, in Seattle and in the vintage community that *used* to be thriving here. In an age of increasing commercialism and greed, they run a business based on love for what they sell. Their prices are hands down the best and lowest in the entire city for vintage furniture, clothing and a million and one things you need the minute you set your eyes upon them. Why? Because they are doing what they love, not just out to make a buck. So it is even more insulting that they are being forced out by greedy power-hungry Masons masquerading as decent human beings. The masons have shown time and again over the last year or so that they do not value the community, their tenants or even their own stated purpose and vision. The level of cruelty that has gone into their efforts to force out all of their tenants is horrifying - it is not fair business practices it is nasty, disrespectful and shameful behavior. Shame on you, Masons, for so blatantly defying your own Masonic Values and Ethnics: "We invest in children, our neighborhoods, and our future" - LIES. The founding fathers of Masonry and the builders of the Fremont community are dishonored by what the Doric Lodge 92 Masons have become.

Deluxe Junk was always my favorite vintage shop in Seattle and is one of the places I always visit when I return. The idea that they're having this kind of fight with the Doric people about staying where they've been for 34 years -- part of a community which their business helped to develop -- speaks to me about why my friends abandoned Fremont years ago for better digs. It's a wonderful part of Seattle that seems to be imploding under its own greed, just like everything else good that has come and gone from that place. It's needless to pine for the good ol' days, but it's insufferable to watch over-privileged, self-important power hungry assholes eat at the core of the community like termites on wood.

The following was sent to me by a member of the Doric Lodge, My response is below it.

The Doric Building Association is attempting, in good faith and as a generous landlord, to renegotiate its lease with a longtime tenant, Deluxe Junk. No steps have been taken to evict Deluxe Junk out of Doric’s building. It is Doric’s sincerest intent and desire to come to some mutually agreeable lease terms with David Marzullo, owner of Deluxe Junk. However, Mr. Marzullo needs to first pay for back rent he owes Doric, stop spreading false rumors about Doric and come to the table and negotiate, in good faith, the payment of his back rent and terms of a new lease agreement.

Statement from Doric Building Association

None of this addresses my questions or concerns on the impact of this to the community of Seattle and Freemont. None of this acknowledges the history behind Deluxe Junk the contribution they have made.

1. What contributions have the Doric Lodge provided for the Freemont community?

2. Being a NON - PROFIT I would think you would want to share and be transparent in your dealings and your vision for the future. Please share with me WHAT that is.

3. You can not replace what the owners are as people or make anything as thought full or profitable as what they have created.

4. Given the complete disregard for the above I seriously doubt that any real legal legitimate lease has been offered. All the actions I have seen point to bullying tactics on the part of the members of the Doric Temple.

5. I am also concerned that the owners are being singled out as vulnerable prey because of there age and gender preference.

Knee jerk reactions with little information and name calling does not make any one look good. Kudo's to Doric for not name calling back.

@ Beaker, I see you are a moron. Let me break it down for you so that maybe next time you'll think before your mouth gets all full of the taste of diaria. Deluxe moved into that location after their first year of business when Fremont had no value. Back then it was considered a slum. The temple, under great management, invited them to move into there vacant space. Nobody was beating down the doors back then. Now, with new management and no respect for history, they first took the two tennents that Deluxe subletted to and are now pushing them out. They are nice people and they are proud people, they have been pushed at from assholes their whole lives and turned the other cheek whenever possible. I suspect that they are fed up, scared for their livelihood and a bit sick over this slap in the face. I don't like explaining things to fuck heads but I'm making an exception here. Good luck getting the taste of shit out of your mouth.

It seems obvious that the people who are commenting on this forum have no idea what is going on or the history of what Doric Lodge has done and continues to do for our community. When was the last time Deluxe Junk opened up their business to feed the homeless? When was the last time Deluxe Junk donated funds to B.F. Day elementary school or to help out some of the less fortunate families that send their kids there? As I have children at B.F. Day I can vouch for what they have done for our school and community.

I don't know what is going on with the lease, but before your hang them out to dry maybe you should do some research. They (masons) have been an active part of the Fremont community for over a hundred years.

this is sad...when i first moved to seattle in 1988 (to fremont), i loved coming to deluxe junk to get some great furniture, fixtures, clothes, records - you name it. this is a shame!

back to 1988, my landlord was moving from fremont after living there for over a decade as she told me she did not like the way it was changing. a year or so after that, the guys who ran mikes old clothes were leaving too telling me "fremont sucks now". so, how long has fremont sucked? a long time it appears.

with ballard being the new bellevue, this again really is awful how things are going with retail in this city.

The Mason's response (@40) sounds pretty reasonable, doesn't it? They want to charge something a little bit closer to market rates than what they had been asking for? They want to collect rents directly instead of letting a tenant sublet units in the building they own?
I don't know the whole story, but you guys sound like an angry, uninformed mob.

@60, you sound like a Doric lodge 92 Mason. Sorry for blowing your super secret identity.

@61... you're exactly who talking I'm talking about. No, I'm not one of the masons. I'm just someone who happens to not agree with you.

I heard someone say "Knee jerk reactions with little information and name calling does not make any one look good. "

Then I heard you respond... "@ Beaker, I see you are a moron. Let me break it down fo\r you so that maybe next time you'll think before your mouth gets all full of the taste of diaria. (sic)"

That was the comment that made me want say... "you people sound like an uninformed mob..." And your knee-jerk reaction of assuming that anyone who doesn't agree with you must be one of the 'enemy' masons sort of reinforces my point, doesn't it?
