Morning News: Drones, Oil, Nuns, and Ted Nugent

Posted by on Thu, Apr 19, 2012 at 8:46 AM

CIA Wants More Power: "The CIA is seeking authority to expand its covert drone campaign in Yemen by launching strikes against terrorism suspects even when it does not know the identities of those who could be killed, U.S. officials said."

Sudan's President Amps Up the Rhetoric: He told a crowd today, "We will not give them an inch of our country, and whoever extends his hand on Sudan, we will cut it," in response to border clashes with South Sudan.

Yesterday's Heavy Afghanistan Story, Part Two: Karzai uses the leaked photos of American soldiers posing with the bodies (and body parts) of insurgents as a reason why the troop departure timeline should be sped up.

BP Reaches Settlements in Gulf Oil Spill: It'd be "one of the largest class-action settlements in U.S. history." BP projects it will be around $7.8 billion, but "there is no cap, and the ultimate payout may be higher or lower." They also asked for a long delay in any trials over further claims. Which, if they win, means that "any trial on federal and state government pollution claims" wouldn't start until 2013.

Seattle's Archbishop Sartain Has a New Assignment: Harass some nuns! "A Vatican document praised the women religious for promoting social justice, but said they have not spoken out on issues of abortion and human sexuality."

911 Dispatcher Reprimanded: The dispatcher who answered the call from Powell's social worker has been officially reprimanded for "ask[ing] seemingly unimportant questions and fail[ing] to grasp the situation."

You Know What I'm Really Worried About, Though, in the Scheme of Things? Bikini baristas. Kitsap County tries to fence them in.

Ted Nugent to Get a Visit from the Secret Service: Over his inflammatory, sorta-President-Obama-threatening remarks.

America's Oldest Teenager: Dies of old age. (Well, a heart attack at 82, technically.)

Ted Nugent? Isn't he some washed up wannabe rock star from the 70's or something?

Stories beginning to surface that Ted Nugent is a pedophile. See for example: http://www.examiner.com/liberal-in-balti…
When it comes to girls he likes "young stuff."

"Courtney Love phoned into the Howard Stern Show on Monday before eventually coming into the studio where she made the shocking allegation that one of the first times she had oral sex was with Ted Nugent . She said she was young and she didn’t want to say exactly how old she was, but eventually confessed she was 12-year-old — which would have made Nugent approximately 28 years old at the time. The New York Post attempted to contact Nugent for a response but was unsuccessful. Moderators at Nugent’s official forum deleted the only thread asking about the topic as evidenced by the forum’s search giving a file not found error for the matched thread. She added it was a long time ago and she didn’t even have breasts yet."

Maybe Child Protection Service agents should accompany the Secret Service when they go to talk to him.

The horrific sight of scantily clad baristas manning our roadside espresso stands demands much needed legislation: mandatory transvaginal probes.

More of this from the NALTs, please—after prodding from progressive activists and liberal Catholics in Congress (Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut chief among them), Catholic bishops heap scorn on Paul Ryan's GOP budget:
Catholic bishops say GOP budget proposal fails moral test

By David Gibson

WASHINGTON – A week after House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan claimed his Catholic faith inspired the Republicans' cost-cutting budget plan, the nation's Catholic bishops reiterated their demand that the federal budget protect the poor, and said the GOP measure "fails to meet these moral criteria..."

...The hierarchy's pushback comes after liberal Catholics in Congress and progressive activists challenged the bishops to resist the GOP budget proposals with the same vigor that they have challenged the Obama administration's contraception mandate and its perceived violations of religious freedom...

...Bishop Stephen E. Blaire of Stockton, Calif... wrote... "Just solutions... require shared sacrifice by all, including raising adequate revenues, eliminating unnecessary military and other spending, and fairly addressing the long-term costs of health insurance and retirement programs..."

I agree with Karzai.

Let's get our troops out of there and tell Karzai AFTER we leave.

@2, is this the Courtney Love who accused Dave Grohl of picking up Farancis Bean?

Under 'this is why we can't have nice things,' $4b in development by developing public transport in Vancouver:
