St. Mary's Is Next Catholic Church to Balk at Seattle Archbishop's R-74 Campaign

Posted by on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 4:19 PM

St. Mary Catholic parish in the Central District has made its stance official, as several Catholic parishes are revolting against Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain's call to join the campaign to repeal same-sex marriage. Tricia Wittmann-Todd, the pastoral life coordinator at St. Mary, sent a letter to her congregation this afternoon that calls the signature-gathering campaign for Referendum 74 potentially "hurtful and divisive to our parish."

"I am particularly concerned about our youth who may be questioning their own sexual identity and need our support at this time in their lives," Wittmann-Todd writes. Her full letter is after the jump.

This isn't just the Catholic laity and parish leadership demurring—they're hitting back with strong language that stakes their objections on moral grounds. Politically, it's a revolt from the local Catholic church's hierarchy. Socially, it's an acknowledgment that gay people are welcome—even beloved—members of Catholic congregations, and the laity will defend them from the bigoted bishops on high.

Thus far, we have also confirmed that St. James and St. Joseph are refusing the petitions. We're also told that St. Catherine, St. Patrick, St. Therese, and Christ Our Hope have refused the signature drive.

Dear People of St Mary’s,

I am writing to share with you my decision regarding collection of signatures at St Mary’s for Referendum 74, to repeal the redefinition of marriage. This is a very sensitive issue, impacting people at the very core of our lives. Archbishop Sartain has sent a letter to all Catholics. I have attached the letter. He has given permission to parishes to collect signatures for the Referendum and encouraged us to do so. He has also expressed that each parish leader must decide how best to proceed, given the pastoral considerations within the parish. After much prayer and reflection, I have decided we will not collect signatures at the parish. I am certain you will find ample opportunity elsewhere to sign whatever petitions you choose.

This decision is based on two primary considerations. St Mary’s mission is “House of God, Home for Everyone”. One of our highest values is inclusion and welcome. I fear that the collection of signatures would be hurtful and divisive to our parish. I am particularly concerned about our youth who may be questioning their own sexual identity and need our support at this time in their lives.

The second consideration is that as Catholics, each of us is asked to form our conscience and decide how to vote on this and other issues, ie tax policies, services to the poor, environmental laws, capital punishment, etc. We form our conscience through studying the Word of God in the Bible, listening carefully to the teachings of the church from our Tradition and the discernment of the Spirit within our own experience. Many of our parishioners have not had sufficient opportunity to form their consciences and those who have represent a wide variety of beliefs. Some believe the church should marry all committed couples, others that the state should marry all but not the church, others that the term “marriage” should be preserved for a man and a woman, while other relationships are “domestic partnerships”, and there are those who believe only heterosexuals should have partners. Our Archbishop is trying to help us in the process of conscience formation by articulating the reasons he believes we should support Referendum 74. I ask you to prayerfully read his letter, hearing all that is being said. In addition, read the Bible, particularly those passages cited by the church on marriage. (you can find these documents at the USCCB website.) Finally, pray and reflect on your own experience of marriage and listen to what God is telling you. Sometimes I think when God is speaking to us, we respond-“call the Bishop, I don’t have time to listen. “ But as Archbishop Sartain writes “The church calls everyone to holiness.”

I hope to have a gathering soon where we can learn more about how to form one’s conscience in general and particularly on the question of marriage. In this, as in all things, I pray we will treat one another with love and respect, building up our community of faith.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and questions with me.

Blessings on this Easter Season,

Tricia

I wish St. Therese would weigh in with the same response. I'm not a member, but it's my go-to church when the catholic dad is in town.

Rock on, Tricia! I love St. Mary's Church and know that the community there very much supports and loves ALL people, just as Christ did.

How about contributing a marble to the Archbishop in the collection basket this Sunday? He seems to have lost some of his.

@5: you should register! That's funny and folks should do it for realz.

Fill those collection plates with marbles since the archbishop clearly has lost his.

@1: I wouldn't worry. St. Therese is fine. (Frankly, they are sooo disorganized right now, they couldn't organize petitions to decide if they should be open for Mass on Sundays.)

I have a strange sneaking suspicion St. Alphonsus will not be on this list. I'd be happy to be proved wrong, though.

@2: You can't be a "celebrate" priest as there's no statue for it.

I would not have expected this to happen. Happy to be wrong.

I'm happy to see that Father Ryan isn't hanging out there all alone. Surely the Vatican can't discipline 7 (and counting) priests in one city.

If all the gay and lesbian priests, nuns, organists, choir members, and laymembers came out, the church would either be forced to enter the 21 st century or to shut down.

I actually wonder if the Archbishop will be censured for making the petition signing optional. Let's not forget who the pope is--Ratzinger has a serious issue with the gays, and a weird hangup about our Archdiocese after Hunthausen, I bet.

Wonderful news! Maybe the beginning of a REAL SPLIT in the "Catholic" Church. {"Catholic" is supposed to mean "Universal". Meaningless since the 16th-century Reformation. You don't REALLY believe that garbage about Eve and the Apple and Original Sin and such? MOST people in the world, certainly believe no such thing, and have no guilt about their sexual activity which directly stems from this Fairy Tale.}
How soon will it be before people renounce their Baptism {no, you won't be going to Hell forever for that!}, stop giving the Vatican Church their money to be used for political purposes, and form their OWN congregations, outside this cabal of morally corrupt pedophilic misogynists? How long, o lord, how long?

Reports that the Chapel of St. Ignatius (go Jesuits and Seattle U!) has also issued a statement saying that they will not allow signature-collecting for Referendum 74.

Remember, "Many Parts, One Body." Just like not everyone in a family believes the exact same things doesn't mean there isn't some central love that unites them, not all Catholics will believe the same things, but they all are united in Christ (is that not what is taught?).
