Cornish Withdraws Its Honorary Degree for Mike Daisey

Posted by on Fri, Apr 6, 2012 at 10:08 AM

In the wake of the scandal surrounding monologuist Mike Daisey (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, see here), Cornish College of the Arts says it no longer plans to award him an honorary degree and he will not be giving this year's commencement address as was planned. From a statement the college has just released:

Mike Daisey will not participate in the 2012 Commencement ceremony at Cornish College of the Arts. Mr. Daisey has acknowledged that he personally did not witness all the events that he said he did, and he exaggerated the level of his own experiences to journalists.

Since its founding by Nellie Cornish in 1914, Cornish College of the Arts has educated and prepared students to contribute to society as artists, citizens, and innovators. One essential principle of that education is the importance of professional integrity. Because of that foundational value, Cornish will not award an honorary degree to Mr. Daisey. Cornish and Mr. Daisey have mutually agreed he will withdraw from commencement. Commencement is the day when we honor our students for their achievements; the focus of this day is properly on the students and their families.

UPDATE

Daisey's statement, in which he says he offered to withdraw from the commencement weeks ago, is here.

THE SEATTLE TIMES HAS THE EMAILS WHY WON'T THEY SHOW DAISEY'S EMAILS.

Because the emails (if real) show that Mike was trying to do damage control again by withdrawing. Cornish wanted the impact of taking it away from him. Not as nice on their part, I suppose.

Liberals don't continue to eat their own, that's a bunch of rightwingers, like many of the simpleton commenters here, who claim to be dems or liberals but are all moronic rightwingers.

As to Cornish.....bunch of spineless, gutless wussies.

Did Nordstrom or Old Navy ever apologize back in 2003 when it came out that the factories they were using in China routinely buried alive underage Chinese girls who were injured on the job --- otherwise the factory mangers would have been fined, and they were too cowardly to kill them outright so they simply buried them alive!

Negative, so what's with those super-wussies at Cornish?

Now Daisey will have to put $75000 in the machine like everyone else.

"Why are people so mean to me?" asks Mr. Daisey.

So now Cornish is the one without integrity? What a passive-aggressive jerk he is.

Daisey's statement makes it sound like he was asked to withdraw from the ceremony because HE'S TOO FAMOUS AND AWESOME and his presence would be too much of a distraction.
All I can say is wow-- I expect nothing less from a serial distorter.

Geocrackr very charitably establishes a core difference between Right and Left these days. The Right will keep doing things the wrong way until they become ingrained and "correct," not caring about the means or the truth, and the left will actually revise their views and morally police their "own."

One accepts what is true, the other tries to create their own truth.

Also, this happened in academia, not one the floor of congress. It is really a case of scholars and peer review working to eventually find truth.

@6: I'm sorry, but as a liberal, I neither condone nor consider liars as"one of my own".
People of my ilk also frown upon cannibalism.

Or, rather, liberals continue to police their own and demand that they meet certain basic standards...

You can pick up those degrees out of street dispensers now. He can still say he gave the commencement address.

@ 1, given the rationalized defense Daisey got from some corners, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some heated disagreement among the Cornish leadership. A surprising number of people really don't understand that noble ends don't justify every available means.

Mike Daisey will soon start telling a story about how Cornish thugs broke into his house and beat him up and forcibly took the fake degree out of his hands. There will be lots of really dramatic, stage-ready lines like when one of the thugs turn towards him in the doorway just before leaving and says "You know what they say: All great art is theft."

It will, of course, be bullshit, and when quizzed about it, Mr. Daisey will say, "... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... I think it was important to convey the *idea* of what they did."
