Derek Kilmer to Run for Congress

Posted by on Sun, Mar 4, 2012 at 2:38 PM

Multiple sources close to state Senator Derek Kilmer (D-Gig Harbor) have confirmed that he has decided to seek the 6th Congressional District seat being vacated by Representative Norm Dicks. Kilmer will make his official announcement in the morning.

Dicks' early retirement was a surprise, and with two young children this can't be an easy decision for Kilmer. But I can't really blame him for leaving the rancor and dysfunction of the state Senate behind in favor of the relatively peaceful bipartisan cooperation of the other Washington.

I don't think he'd have to vacate his seat--he's not up for re-election until 2014--so he can give this a shot and if he falls short, no harm done.

He's a good guy with a good grasp on policy; he's certainly a candidate who would do Washington proud.

If he did vacate the seat so he could raise money while the legislature was locked in a Special Session, or two, then they would have to be sure that Larry Seaquist would be able to move from the House without too much trouble.

I think that having children that are as young as they are would make it easier. Uprooting kids when they are middle or HS age would be very tough.

Good for him, good for the great State of Washington.

@2: State law doesn't prohibit state electeds from raising money during session for federal office.

He certainly made a good impression on me Friday night in his remarks in the Senate.

@2, good to know, I'll plan on supporting him sooner rather than later.

"...But I can't really blame him for leaving the rancor and dysfunction of the state Senate behind in favor of the relatively peaceful bipartisan cooperation of the other Washington..."

Is that what passes for irony after a busy weekend?

Well done, BTW.

"...the relatively peaceful bipartisan cooperation of the other Washington."

That is really harsh, Goldy, even for you.

I took it at face value. Look for "Washington politicians" it's half about serving the people, and the other half about getting an easy job that pays well with lots of free time.

That's what we Northwesters do.

I won't deny it.

Anyone else - of either political party - thinking of running for the 6CD should just concede that Derek Kilmer is not only the best candidate to run for this seat, but the best qualified and capable of representing that district in Congress.

He's been incredibly effective at representing people of the Peninsula in the Legislature, as well as gaining genuine bipartisan support for common-sense solutions.
