It's musical chairs season in Olympia today, with two longtime Seattle state representatives—Mary Lou Dickerson (D-Ballard) and Phyllis Gutierrez-Kenney (D-North Seattle) announcing their retirement. Dickerson was first elected in 1994, Gutierrez-Kenney in 1997.

When seats open up like this, prospective candidates tend to line up fast. In fact, I first heard of Dickerson's retirement in a press release from Nick Cail, a fundraiser for the 5th Avenue Theater, announcing his intention to run for her seat. Wow. That was fast.

As for Gutierrez-Kenney's seat, it wouldn't be surprising to see Sylvester Cann slide over into that position out of his challenge to Gerry Pollet, who was appointed to fill out the term for David Frockt's old House seat, after Frockt was appointed to fill out the term of the late state Senator Scott White.

Meanwhile, down in the 11th LD, Port of Seattle Commissioner Rob Holland confirmed to me today that he plans to seek the House seat being vacated by Representative Bob Hasagawa, who is seeking the Senate seat that Margarita Prentice was redistricted out of. Like I said: Musical chairs.
