Does anyone die of natural causes at 43? I always thought that "natural causes" was synonymous with "old age." Anyway, he's been acting more wack than usual recently. Perhaps he had a brain episode.

I'm going to guess that dying "suddenly" of "natural causes" at age 43 is likely to mean dying of a sudden heart attack.

I can't say I'm happy he's dead, because it takes a much deeper level of evil to achieve that, but I sure can't say I'm sad either. I feel sorry for his wife and kids, who will be legitimately crushed.

@ 18, it may be poor manners to express joy at the death of someone, but it's not at all evil unless that dead person was doing good.

For example, being happy on hearing of MLK's assassination in 1968 would have been an good indication of someone's bad character. But someone like Breitbart, who had a destructive influence on American politics? Sorry, but there's nothing evil about having a positive reaction to that.

@1 - Sadly, it is possible to die of natural causes at the age of 43. "Accidental causes" is usually used for things like car accidents, so I think we can rule that out. Cancer is the most obvious example of natural causes in someone young, but since it wasn't announced before that he was ill, I suspect it was sudden, like a heart attack or stroke.

Having just turned 44 a few weeks ago, it puts things in perspective. I wish his family the best.

I maintain that it is not only possible, but just to call out those who have passed for their horrible actions while not necessarily delighting in their demise. Breitbart was many things (to name only a few): misogynist, liar, professional panderer, and racial arsonist. He directly lead to the disenfranchisement of minorities, and he took glee in being at the forefront of the American reactionary movement.

So you may ask, am I delighted he's dead? No. Am I glad that he won't be able to leach his racist, paranoid brand of thought into the minds of White America any longer? Emphatically, yes.

@18: Only if your morality is based in intent and thought, and not in action or effect, or holds that life is intrinsically valuable or Good. If the world is a measurably better place because someone is dead, on the balance or entirely, then I see no issue with celebrating that person's death. I for one am happy that I have to deal with one discursive troll fewer, and I'm not particularly sympathetic to Breitbart's loved ones, because I think that loving such a horrible, hateful, manipulative, lying sack of santorum is a functionally-harmful, morally-objectionable action in and of itself, making his loved ones ethically culpable for actively enabling his actions and likewise deserving of shaming, though to a lesser extent than the man himself. So I see no downside and plenty of upside to his death (I don't think that being alive, in and of itself, is somehow a moral good; I think what determines Good and Bad are the impacts of one's actions). Of course, I'm not ecstatic or anything: I really never gave Breitbart a second thought when he wasn't being a professional asshat, but I'm definitely happier knowing I'll never have to deal with that again.

I'm not sure why we're supposed to feel sorry for his kids. Their father was an asshole who, if his private behavior was anything like his public persona, showered them with verbal abuse and poisoned the atmosphere of their home every day. They're better off without him, and I'm sure they'll get a big chunk of inherited dirty money locked up in protected trust funds before Shirley Sherrod can get to his estate (not that she doesn't deserve every penny of it).

A sudden, unexpected death is almost always a stroke or heart attack, and at 43, a stroke or heart attack is almost always caused by drugs (usually cocaine). Certainly not 100% but you know...play the odds.

i just read sullivan's thoughts at the end of the day on breitbart, about how much the relentlessness of contemporary media takes its toll, about breitbart's mania (and it sounds like he was indeed manic), his rage ... i don't know, i just keep thinking about his kids. how did he not make a better choice for THEM even if he couldn't make it for himself?

and then i started thinking of dan, and how busy he must be too, with the column and the podcast and the mtv show and the whole paper on top of all that, and the books and and and .... and then the mama bear in me really started worrying ... dan, i know you take your family super seriously, but hey, take care of yourself ok? they need you even more than we do.

i'm tired. this is probably silly. but everyone with kids should go give them a sleepy kiss tonight.

I would never wish anyone dead, but there are some obituaries that I really enjoy reading.

Of course the real tragedy in this scenario was that he didn't die in the womb.

Well this site and most of the commenters have finally drawn back the curtain to reveal what you all are: not crusaders for gay equality, but shills for left-wing politics.

Andrew Breitbart happened to be more libertarian on social issues, including gay issues. But that means nothing to any of you because you just can't comprehend how someone can be/support gays yet oppose most of the Obama-Kennedy-ACORN agenda.

With your vitriol you've just proven that you're the biggest hyprocrits in the world.

@121 lol - morons like you think it's ok to lie, cheat and steal for Jesus. Here's a hint: READ THE BOOK CALLED THE BIBLE and the part called the Ten Commandments.

And then realize it's not a Checklist for Things To Do before you Leap.

I would take Breitbart's hatred of me and your accusations of hypocrisy as the highest form of compliment. There are plenty of people whose beliefs are not the same as mine who don't behave as a reprehensible human being.

I think Rolling Stone's "Death of a Douche" article and responses of that nature are out of line. I was no fan of his either, but he's dead and gone. Hoping he burns in hell or calling him an asshole in the days after his death isn't hurting him, it's only hurting his family. Have some decorum and let them grieve.
