Mitt Romney Offers Tax Cuts as Relief from the Oppressive Mitt Romney Economic Plan

Posted by on Mon, Feb 27, 2012 at 2:20 PM

David Frum looks at how Mitt Romney's claims on Friday that he's in favor of "an across-the-board, 20% reduction in marginal individual income tax rates" flies in the face of the economic plan that Romney offered up last year.

Frum calls this move exactly what it is: A shameful dive for the base, an effort to shore up old and wealthy voters, and completely unrealistic. I used to assume that Romney was going to run for the center as soon as he lined up the nomination. Now I'm wondering if he's going to have to keep his base happy all the way through November.

I just got an email from Mark Hargrove:

The House Republicans released their operating budget proposal on Feb. 17. It emphasizes the priorities of funding education first, ensuring public safety and protecting the most vulnerable. To learn more, please click here.
Our budget differs from the governor’s budget by:

$580 million more for education;
$40 million more for public safety; and
$89 million more for the most vulnerable.

I have the feeling the Tea Partiers are NOT going to shut up and vote as they're told - at a minimum, I look forward to them raising holy hell every time Romney "betrays" them by taking a moderate stance on any issue whatsoever during the general election. Beyond that, I'd love to see a third-party challenge from Ron Paul or Santorum or some such idiot.

He wants to cut a higher percentage than he pays now, 14.9%. Why should the government give Romney 5.1% of his income? This guy/robot really is greedy.

David "Axis Of Evil" Frum's relation to the Republican party is exactly like a parent's relation to the kids he screwed up: both are desperate for their offspring to straighten out before they completely wreck their lives (not to mention the family's good name). Tough shit. Frum helped cement the current Republican identity as the party of unreason, demogoguery and far-right extremism. Reap, sow, etc. Fuck him.
