Frank Bruni on the Republican Primaries and the Oscars

Posted by on Sun, Feb 26, 2012 at 11:02 AM

War horse, def: something... that has become overly familiar or hackneyed due to much repetition in the standard repertoire.
  • War horse, def: "something... that has become overly familiar or hackneyed due to much repetition in the standard repertoire."

"Both pointlessly bloated, the two contests showcase a slew of options without a single one that inspires outsize passion or commands any real consensus....

Such a sprawling buffet, so many empty calories...

What we have here are two hoary institutions flailing for relevance, failing to find it and responding in ways that merely exhaust the audience*."

Hear, hear, sir!

*Speaking of exhaustion, that last debate was the TWENTIETH. And you can get your War Horse wallpaper, profile pics, icons/avatars, and email signatures over here (seriously!).

Not bad, but not up to Bruni's usual mark. This is why I stay as mediocre as possible at my own job, so when I phone it in now and then nobody notices.

War Horse is a film about white people in Europe, the standard for Best Picture. War Horse will win.

Yeah, well I'm still going to get drunk and watch the events unfold.

The Artist is the most unique film nominated for best picture in, oh, a decade at least. It will win. Mind you, it is a French film, which may cost it a few votes.

Really? Warhorse? A movie that hit every single trope of its genre? It was about as predictable as Iron Man. But, "Horses, Pretty...." so it's going to win some awards despite being just about as predictable of a movie as there ever was.

Trivia time: If War Horse won Best Picture, it would join which other properties as winners of both that award and the Tony for Best Play?

Bonus question: What was the property most recently nominated for both awards?

Also in common, the Republican Party and the Oscars both hold endless fascination for gay men.
