Greg Nickels for Lt. Governor!

Posted by on Fri, Feb 24, 2012 at 10:06 AM

I hope I wasn't too harsh on former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels yesterday in poo-pooing his bid for Secretary of State. I like Nickels. I think he'd do a fine job. I just don't think he has much of a chance of winning.

Now if Nickels had instead announced his intention to challenge Democratic incumbent Brad Owen for the Lt. Governorship, I would have had a totally different reaction. Owen kinda sucks, and has a strong Republican challenger, former Republican state senate majority leader Bill Finkbeiner, who I can easily imagine endorsing. So if Nickels were to jump into that race, I think many Democrats would swarm to his support.

So what say, Greg? How about switching races, and finally giving the Democratic base a Lt. Governor candidate they can get excited about?

Eight first-person references in three paragraphs. Is file about Greg Nickels, or about you?.

I think a lot of dems are taking a close look at Finkbeiner or Glenn Anderson, who voted for marriage equality on the House. I'm voting for Finkbeiner as things stand right now. I would bet Reagan Dunn's vote for marriage equality on the King Co Council might earn him a second look from some dems as well.

I'm down. Though frankly a ratty towel that has been lying under the washing machine for five years would be better than Brad Owen.

Good lord, there's only one job more insignificant than Secretary of State, and that's Lieutenant Governor. That ratty towel is doing a more important job.

Margiewanna is still a risky thingie so nobody wants to take on Bradsie yet.

Cause they're cowards. Like the cash-obsessed MDs and clinics getting rich off it.

Timing is everything. Put me down for Rat. E. Towel for Lt Gov!

@4: that may be true, but the biggest part of the lt. Gov's job: actually taking over if the gov resigns or dies is pretty damn important. If Gregoire had left to take the solicitor general job, do you think Owen would be signing the marriage bill into law? Or a bill to require insurance companies to cover abortion? We gotta make sure the person one scandal or one undercooked piece of chicken away from the governorship is someone who we'd actually want to, you know, potentially serve as governor.

Joel @1, Considering my usual verbosity, I would've hoped you'd compliment me on my expert use of such a spare, one-letter-word like "I".

Greg Nickels should be incarcerated.

He is the mastermind behind Seattle's demise.

Didn't The Stranger last endorse a bag of potato chips for lt.gov?

Lite Guv is a fairly useless position most of the time, which is fortunate, since we've had some pretty useless lite guvs.

Maybe he should try mayor again. I try to like McGinn but sometimes find it hard.

I think you mean "pooh-poohed," Goldy. (Unless your Santorum fixation is running over into your other posts.)

@12, I believe both spellings are acceptable, but yes, "pooh-pooh" does appear to be the more common.
