Morning News: Journalists Killed, Korans Burned, Obama Singing Again

Posted by on Wed, Feb 22, 2012 at 8:45 AM

Two Journalists Die in Syria: "The veteran Sunday Times correspondent Marie Colvin and the French photographer Remi Ochlik have been killed in the Syrian city of Homs after an artillery shell hit the house in which they were staying." Also killed were three Syrian activists, including a videoblogger. Two other foreign reporters and seven activists were wounded.

From Colvin's editor's statement:

"Nothing seemed to deter her. But she was much more than a war reporter. She was a woman with a tremendous joie de vivre, full of humour and mischief and surrounded by a large circle of friends, all of whom feared the consequences of her bravery."

Shooting in Rainier Beach: Two men injured in a shooting outside Maya's Restaurant on Rainier Ave S.

Remember That "Oops, We Burned Some Korans" Business? It's not going away. "At least six people have been killed and dozens injured in Afghanistan after protests [over the incident] spread... US officials apologised on Tuesday after Korans were "inadvertently" put in an incinerator at Bagram airbase. Officials at Bagram reportedly believed Taliban prisoners were using the books to pass messages to each other."

East Side Story: All lanes of westbound 520 are closed after a fatal accident early this morning. Stevens Pass is also still closed after a snowslide.

Shandy "Mexican Piss" Cobane: Earning hella overtime. He "was allowed to increase his overtime hours by 37% last year, helping make up most of the pay he lost to a suspension... Cobane earned 167 hours of overtime in 2011, despite being suspended for 30 days without pay. In 2010, Cobane turned in 121.5 hours of overtime for the full calendar year."

Rihanna and Chr——: Sorry, I just can't fucking type that. Read about the hottest domestic violence duet of the week here; take Grant's poll here. I vote for "everyone."

Time to Buy a Dalmation: You could live inside an old firehouse! Seattle's selling two of 'em.

Obama Sings the Blues: No, literally. He sang with B.B. King at a White House blues event. Yes, there is video! WATCH IT:

HE FUCKING SANG WITH BB KING AND MICK JAGGER; MAYBE HE WASN'T THE BEST SINGER, BUT HE GOT ENOUGH CHARISMA TO PULL ANOTEHR GAIUS JULIUS ON THE REPUBLIC.

He is bashful and embarrassed AND HE LOVES IT. He is singing with the one and only Beale Street Blues Boy King. Breaks my goddamn heart to see him so happy for a few seconds.

@18, whatever you've been using for marbles appear to have been lost. Check under your chair.

@12, I'll bet he does. I'll bet he has the box set. Middle-aged white guys LOVE the blues. One of the great mysteries of American culture is how the blues became a music enjoyed almost exclusively by middle-aged white dudes in Tommy Bahama shirts and straw gambler hats.

I love the blues. It is heaps of fun to play along with.

@Fnarf: Maybe because mainstream white America was deaf to the blues until some long haired English men introduced them to music from their own backyard. Until British Blues arrived in the US our greatest artists supplemented their income by sharecropping in the off season, some even went over to the UK because the audience was more accepting. Cream could make Robert Johnson's "Cross Road Blues" a hit to white America and those same fans have expanded their knowledge and of the blues to include the styles of Chicago Blues, Delta Blues, Piedmont Blues, Texas Blues...

Kim @21 - The same thing could be said of Chicago House and Detroit Techno - Black musicians got more early cred by the British and that's how they earned their living until white guys in Britain brought the stuff back to the States.

NaFun @23: I don't disagree. The US is sometimes CT slow at recognizing its home grown treasures, and MRI slow when it comes to justice for all. We're a little too insulated it seems.

I wonder how those firehouses are zoned.

Is that firehouse up on the Hill (on 15th) still a stupid video store? It always killed me that it wasn't a bar when I lived there.

Anyone in my hometown of Evanston, IL, make sure to visit the Fire House Grill on Chicago Avenue.
