Archie Comics to Take On Occupy Wall Street

Posted by on Wed, Feb 22, 2012 at 3:29 PM

Bleeding Cool broke the news yesterday: Apparently, Archie Comics #635...

...will tell the story of the global protest against massively unequal redistrubution of wealth and power, under the title Occupy Riverdale, echoing the Occupy movements present around the world...And just as Betty and Veronica are devided over Archie, so here they are divided by being on the 99% or the 1%.

The story is apparently being told in Archie Comics' new realistic art style. As you can see from the cover, Betty Veronica* and Reggie are on the side of the 1% with Jughead and Betty on the Occupy side and Archie torn between the two. I think this may be the first major comics company response to Occupy Wall Street; frankly, I can't wait to see how Batman deals with all this.

* Sorry for the double-Bettying. I just hate Veronica so, so much.

If it's Frank Miller Batman, he'll beat up some dirty useless homeless fucks to draw the police away from the Occupy encampment, then he'll drive the Batmobile through the densest part of the Occupy crowd. Then he'll get out to deliver an astonishingly violent beatdown while lecturing them moodily.

The Archie's website mentions The Stranger by name in it's blog.

Archie comics have ALWAYS been about class, with Reggie and Veronica representing the 1%. Archie represents the working class guy who is deluded into thinking that he could somehow, someday break into the 1% (Veronica's pants). Betty represents all that is virtuous of the working class. Jughead represents the working class who is not only satisfied with working class pleasures but revels in them. Dilbert, Moose, and the rest all have a place in the class conflict. Nearly all of the humor in Archie is class driven.

Don't act like Archie comics just woke up to class differences; that's what it has ALWAYS been about. Maybe you should have Charles read them to you.

This isn't actually going to be an Archie comic though. It might be put out by people who used to work on Archie, but it won't be an official in-universe thing.

And Jill Thompson's art is amazing.

Real talk: Betty and Jughead are banging on the sly. Also, Archie's gay but hasn't figured it out yet.

I don't know what style they're using for the interior, but that's a variant cover by the great Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother, Sandman).

I want to dislike the new style, but Jughead is so perfect.

I enjoyed fantasizing about Betty more when she was cartoonier.

My fave was when Archie and the gang discussed the ramifications of a post-peak-oil society.

I want an Archie Comic take on the Republican Primaries! Who would be the Santorum character? Veronica's Dad is obviously Mitt Romney. Gingrich?

Sure, it's all Kumbaya until Midge Klump shows up in a black bandanna with a can of paint.

Didn't they start a gay character too, only to marry him off to a soldier five minutes later? Au courant on all the latest tropes, our Archie.

And with this cover, Betty & Veronica become decidedly not as hot as I remember them from my childhood...

Batman is a pretty good picture of how a goodly portion of the 1% likes to see itself.

Veronica, Paul. Veronica and Reggie. Betty would NEVER be part of the 1%.
