Okay, So This Might Be a Good HBO Show

Posted by on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 11:13 AM

HBO has been reeeeal hit and miss lately, with the debut of the well-cast but slow as molasses Luck, and Ricky Gervais' Life's Too Short which is funny by half. (GET IT??? Okay, whatever, it's not funny at all.) However the network may have a hit on its hands with the April 15 premiere of Girls, executive produced by Judd Apatow—you know, that Freaks and Geeks and Bridesmaids and Knocked Up and a billion other things guy—and created and starring Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture). It's all about a gaggle of 20-something gals trying to make it in New York, and by the look of this trailer? IT'S FUNNY. Watch it and keep your fingers crossed.

Hmm. The trailer I just watched seems to have been edited to remove all the "funny" parts...

It makes me sad that the rest of the world (or at least, audience) seems to be too attentionally limited to enjoy Luck as much as I have been.

A group of 20-somethings trying to make it in New York.

Wow. How original.

New York is such a big state... I wonder where in New York they chose to set it? Oh wait, this is television so it's in New York City of course. And by New York City on Television, it actually means it's in Manhattan-minus-Harlem (maybe someone will mention Brooklyn once or twice)

It's Friends except on HBO, so it'll be Friends where they get naked, do drugs, have lesbian experiences, and swear a lot. Whoop-di-do.

Hollywood is dead.

As opposed to 20-something dudes in NY for How To Make It In America. Things went so well for that show by HBO standards.

Life's Too Short is pretty good. It's David Brent as a little person.

Life's Too Short was hysterical. Liam Niesen telling jokes had me in stitches.

I had to watch each of the initial Luck episodes two or three times each before I could understand what was happening, who these people were, and what the fuck they were saying.

With the third episode, only had to watch it once, but still all the horses look alike to me.

Are there only brown thoroughbreds?

Still doesn't have the life of Sopranos or even Empire Boardwalk, but it's better than Making It.

Haven't been able to force myself to watch Life is Short.

As for Girls, the shorter promo was funnier. Are those the only funny moments? And if so, why did they leave the best of 'em out of the long promo?

Shoulda checked with Wikipedia, and while many, if not most, thoroughbreds are shades of brown, I don't understand why all three of the horses with main story lines so far, seem to be the same shade of brown.

or so similar, I can't tell 'em apart, except by the people around them. At least on my TV, but I'm not a horse person.

I watched both trailers. Neither made me even smile. If someone had texted me those trailers I would not even give them a perfunctory 'lol'. HBO has clearly lost their mojo.

This is funding that should be funneled to Game of Thrones instead. That's a show with a proven success record, and it will require increased funding with each successive season, as the plot lines get more complex and the world more expansive. I was right when I predicted that show being huge for Peter Dinklage's career, and I'm right about this too, dammit.

If this show has no negative effect on GoT 's funding, then I will allow it. I won't watch it, but I'll allow it.

@12

I fully agree...as well as squandering funds necessary for the inevitable live action version of Sandman HBO is have to do one day. No one else can at this point.
