Morning News: Avalanche Deaths, Nuclear Talks, Dingoes

Posted by on Mon, Feb 20, 2012 at 7:59 AM

"Sometimes nature is bigger than we are": As Christopher posted yesterday, four people died in avalanches at Stevens Pass and the Summit at Snoqualmie. (That quote is from King County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Katie Larson.)

More nature tragedy: An experienced scuba diver died Sunday morning during a deep-water class in West Seattle.

Helping keep active: Prominent anti-immigration Arizona sheriff Paul Babeu "threatened his Mexican ex-lover with deportation when the man refused to promise never to disclose their years-long relationship," according to the Phoenix New Times. Dan breaks it down.

Iran drama continues: UN inspectors are in Tehran for two days of nuclear talks, but "western diplomats have played down any hopes of a major breakthrough." The New York Times looks at the possibility of an Israeli raid:

Should Israel decide to launch a strike on Iran, its pilots would have to fly more than 1,000 miles across unfriendly airspace, refuel in the air en route, fight off Iran’s air defenses, attack multiple underground sites simultaneously — and use at least 100 planes.

“All the pundits who talk about ‘Oh, yeah, bomb Iran,’ it ain’t going to be that easy,” said Lt. Gen. David A. Deptula, who retired last year as the Air Force’s top intelligence official.

A connection between Tylenol and childhood asthma: Ohio doctor John McBride says there is one. "All the studies he looked at showed a link between asthma and acetaminophen... 'There's an incredible consistency. Everybody around the world who's looked for this association has been able to find it.'"

You can finally fall asleep again: The Colbert Report should be back tonight.

The Downton Abbey finale last night: I was going to ask, "Did you watch it?" But apparently you definitely did. "The show is so popular in the Seattle area, KCTS is consistently the No. 1 or No. 2 PBS station in the country for Abbey ratings."

Australia is obsessed: Authorities open a new inquest to determine once and for all if dingoes really did eat that baby. (Did you just think of this scene from Seinfeld?)

It's Presidents Day: Most liquor stores are open, street parking is free, school's out. More here.

Meanwhile, Texas has refused to even acknowledge the possibility that it actually EXECUTED an innocent man even in the light of new revelations regarding the reliability of the prosecution's fire expert...

Australia is obsessed because this case more than any other opened their eyes to who they really are as a people, and showed them for the first time (with a white person, at least) just how flimsy "justice" can be. They all but crucified that woman. She wasn't just sent to prison, she was sent to hard labor, while pregnant, and served years of that sentence, even though her story, however improbable, turned out to be true. And almost all of the evidence against her was faked: "blood" that turned out to be baby oil, etc.

It's an object lesson in mass hysteria and hopelessly incompetent policing.

Re Babeu: What's the deal with bald conservative closet cases? He looks like that prostitute Bush was messing around with.
