Post-Grammy Quiz

Posted by on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 1:54 PM

This quiz concerns two things addressed earlier today on Line Out, both significant enough to the culture at large I want to revisit them here.

Thing 1: The many Twittering teens who want to know who the fuck is Paul McCartney.

Thing 2: The many Twittering women who'd be perfectly happy to have the shit beat out of them by Chris Brown.

The quiz (which is an easy one, for Monday):

Kids are idiots, but I expect better from grownups.

I personally like the "Who is Bonny Bear" thing better than the "Who is Paul McCartney" thing.

(Full disclosure: because I said the same thing to my wife recently. #unhip)

I'd go easy on the kids. How many of you knew who Perry Como was when you were growing up, if your parents weren't playing his records in your house?

Paul McCartney's guest spot on The Simpsons is around 20 years old and his years as the member of a good band were over well before that. Of course kids today have no clue who he is.

They'd know who Ringo Starr is, because Ringo is the greatest Beatle.

As for the "I'd let Chris Brown beat me." chicks... It makes me sigh.

Not knowing who some pop star who did his most vital work more than 40 years ago is isn't that surprising; how many kids in the 60s knew who Al Jolson or Sophie Tucker were?

Girls saying they'd be happy to have Chris Brown beat them up is just sick and wrong.

I'm with 6. By the time I got to the end of that list of pro-beating Tweets, I was ready to puke and cry at the same time.

Hopefully some of the Chris Brown beating fangirls are genuinely into sadomasochism, but there can be no hope for someone who doesn't know who Paul McCartney is AND thinks that the best use of the Interbutts to find out is to tweet about it rather than, say, Google his Liverpudlian ass.

I'm an asshole...neither are very surprising.

Women who want to be subserviant to a rich and hot man? *clutches pearls*

Children who don't know who some old fart is after he spent the over 4 decades making shitty music and milking the fame he had of the decade before that? Shocking. Heck, if they knew who Axl Rose was, I'd be surprised.

The kids not knowing who Paul McCartney is gives me hope for a brighter future where people don't care about The Beatles.

Just wait until the Gen M morons realize that the Baby Boomers put 2050 bugs into the software that runs the generators.

Have fun in the dark, bozos.

I'd say we should beat the desire to be beaten by Chris Brown out of people, but, well.

The show last night was full of irrelevant people making mediocre music. The industry desperately clings to a time when "everyone" bought the music of a few artists, and it's just not that way anymore. Their format for making money doesn't work as well, so they push up on stage the ones they're clinging to. The Beach Boys? Paul McCartney? I swear, even Gaga is looking long in the tooth (shows you how fast things change, and how diminishing the interest in hegemonic pop stars). And yes, who the #$@%T is Bon Iver?

@13 Dead on.

At least most the Chris Brown comments are, to some degree, in jest (I think?).

All the McCartney comments are sincere. *sigh*

@18: It's debatable whether Lennon or McCartney wrote the best Beatles songs, but I think it's clear who wrote the worst.

Sadly, I am not at all surprised that women say they wish they were beaten by Chris. They don't, really. But, it is sad and pathetic to imagine otherwise.

all my nieces and nephews are completely aware who paul mccartney is, and who the beatles were. they know many beatles songs, especially from that #1 collection. i can only conclude that the parents of children who don't know the beatles are utterly lame. or are not white people.

I just read that this was the 2nd biggest ratings results ever for a Grammy show. 40million+ viewers.
