Will Washington's Gay Marriage Bill Be Signed on Valentines Day? (Updated With Answer...)

Posted by on Thu, Feb 9, 2012 at 5:00 PM

It's certainly a possibility. Here's why:

Governor Chris Gregoire has five days—including Saturdays but not Sundays—from the moment she receives the bill to sign it into law. And Karina Shagren, a spokesperson for Gregoire, just told me that the governor hasn't yet received the bill. (And therefore can't yet make any plans for a signing ceremony.)

In all likelihood Gregoire will get the bill on her desk tomorrow (after all the proper signing by legislative types is done and the traditional hand-delivering has taken place), and if that happens, it will mean Gregoire has until Wednesday to sign the bill.

Valentines Day, as all you lovers know, is Tuesday.

UPDATE: Answer is... No. The governor's office received the bill late today and issued this brief statement:

Gov. Chris Gregoire on Monday, Feb. 13th, will take action on legislation to provide marriage equality in Washington state.

OOPS, FUCK YOU BACONCAT.

The Secretary of State's information of a Gregoire announcement was apparently wrong! The Governor's office hasn't got the bill yet so no date set.

AGAIN: ENFUCKEN YOURSELF, BACONCAT.

That would be sweet, and in line with the more mediagenic profile she's been cultivating so hard recently.

Does anyone even know how much money NOM has to throw at us? I know that they're kind of shady and that in 2010 just 2 individuals accounted for 2/3 rd's of their budget.

I wonder if they will have enough money to fund campaigns in ME, WA, MN and possibly MD, especially if they still go after marriage equality supporters in IA, NH and NY. Then there's the states of NJ and IL which will be voting on marriage equality in the near future.

They might just have to cut their losses and give up a few fights.

Here's hoping!

@8: You're passionate and all, but let's follow Washington United's lead and focus on what matters.

There's strategy, there's fretting but then there's celebration. We got this :)

Either way it'll be the first Valentine's Day™ where marriage is an equal right in this state. Still pretty damn cool.

@Outercrow- Sort of even if with no referendum the law would not have gone into effect immediately.

I don't understand this. At all.

If there's no procedural obstacle, why wouldn't you sign this on Valentine's Day?

I really want to go see it being signed. Anyone know if that's possible or how I can do it?

@13, by sacrificing the PR opportunity she lets more citizens spend ALL of Valentine's Day feeling super marriageable.

Yup, I'm thinking she is doing it that way so couples who want to get married on the first Valentine's after the law is signed can do so. I forsee a HUGE boom in the local wedding supply industry. :) -And might I say, about damn time?

Was someone planning a massacre? I don't get the St Valentines day angle of the post? What does a ancient death-seeking follower of some Hebrew zealot have to do with gay relationships?

2-14 is the day that all bills must get out of their house of origin. Having a big celebration signing would be a little distracting, and I'll bet the Governor thought about that. Believe it or not, this isn't the only thing the Leg is concerned with this session.

Valentines Day would be extremely appropriate because St. Valentine got his sainthood for marrying people who were legally not allowed to be married. He risked everything for the right of marriage.
