Tut, Tut

Posted by on Thu, Feb 9, 2012 at 2:22 PM

I just got word:

On Thursday, Feb. 16 tickets become available for general public purchase for Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs, opening at Pacific Science Center May 24, 2012.

Let the mother of all blockbusters begin.

Whuuuuuuut!?! This is awesome.

We couldn't go in 1978 because our home room teacher believed in the Tut curse and deliberately screwed up the field trip deadline.

Though, was there a rash of mummy strangulations in 1978?

If it's anything like what came through Denver last year the exhibit is more about people finding the tombs than what was in them, the only gold I saw was in a video; however they did have his stomach in the jar it was left in. There was some Egyptian carvings and things and a recreation of how the tomb looked when it was discovered.

My sister and I were obsessed with the 1978 exhibit. I was 11, she was 10, and we could not get enough of King Tut.

We had books and t-shirts and even built our own life size mummy out of chicken wire, plaster of paris, and ribbons of old sheets.

Such fond memories of seeing it multiple times with my mom, and grandparents. Very much looking forward to creating new ones with my teenage niece.

If the Science Center would get this exhibit as well, I would be a happy camper:

Don't go expecting the 1978 exhibit.

In fact, if you went to the 1978 exhibit, don't go at all, you'll be terribly disappointed.

None of the good artifacts are in the current exhibit at all. I wasn't exactly expecting to see the mask again (okay, with all the ads featuring the photo, maybe I was), but there wasn't a single showstopper piece in the whole exhibit (not even one of the guardian figures from the sarcophagus). On top of that, the show as a whole was not terribly well put together, and the descriptions on the cases were almost unreadable.

The me in 1978 is now very sad.

I'm thrilled - this is such an important exhibit, perfect for the science center. The tour has raised huge sums to send back to Egyptian museums. It may be no 1978, but it's nothing to sneeze at.

I saw it in 1976 in New Orleans, and then in Miami in 2006 and again in Atlanta in 2008. I loved it personally and think everyone should see it. But then again, I'm a history geek.

I got to see the artifacts in the Cairo Museum in 2008. Will I go to this? Yes although #10 is making me rethink that.

Ah, I remember seeing it in the 70s in Toronto. I wanted a reproduction of the gold statue of Selket so badly. And, hey, only $5K. No, I didn't get it. I guess the tiny gold Bastet on my key chain must suffice.

I'll go as long as I can take photos. I will not be a happy Nile farmer if there is a no photography policy.
