Lunchtime Quickie: Today In White Guys In Black Face...

Posted by on Wed, Feb 8, 2012 at 12:30 PM

... maybe this interviewing-students-on-video trend should just stop. And maybe it should stop with this guy in black face at Brigham Young University?

I do not understand why he did it in blackface.

The responses reveal some pretty ignorant outlooks, obviously, but to be honest, I don't think we'd find a lot of difference among college students in Seattle.

Yeah, ignorance tends to be pretty widespread. Plus, the editing in these types of videos always bothers me. It's all too easy to edit a string of "Martin Luther King" answers (or wrong answers to "when is Black History Month")...but what exactly does this prove? What was the sample size; how many people did this guy interview who gave intillegent or correct answers? If you interview enough people on the street, you'll always get enough dumbass answers to make one of these videos. Anyway, they're overplayed and pretty boring at this point.

I wonder how well that interviewer could answer questions about Native American history. Bet you could make him look stupid asking him to name even one Native American rights activist.

This is just dumb, inflammatory shit. I don't know a lot of things in history that are important, or related to some injustice. I know what I know. I am a medical student, and I'm working towards doing what I can to make the world a better place, with whatever small capacity I have.

Meanwhile this ass puts himself on a moral pedastal because he happens to know how to edit video and make decent people (I concede that those impressions were pretty painful) look bad. I'm not going to go read up on black history just because I might be ambushed by an asshole with a video camera. Shit pisses me off.

@ 4 The joke is that the guy is all "gotcha" about ignorance, but decided putting on a fucking minstrel show was a good way to expose it.

Oh fuck. This shit is horrifying. And completely believable. I didn't attend BYU, but my husband did because he got a full scholarship there. I did, however, hang out a lot on the campus when I was sluffing class in high school in the mid '90s, since I attended Provo High, which is across the street from BYU. And I had a lot of friends who went there. I will tell you right now: BYU is one motherfucking racist place. Regardless of the sample size, those responses are reprentative of a large majority of the student body. They don't even know they're being racist when they casually say that kind of shit. The whole video is insane, beginning with the interviewer's awful blackface. I think the answers would have been more racist if the interviewer had been just a random white guy.
