Patty Murray Fights for Women's Rights—Even When It Isn't the Issue of the Day

Posted by on Tue, Feb 7, 2012 at 4:57 PM

Last week, US Senator Patty Murray led a noisy campaign condemning the Susan G. Komen foundation's decision to defund Planned Parenthood breast cancer screenings—she appeared on MSNBC, she sent routine email blasts criticizing their decision, and she helped round up 24 other US Senators to sign a letter condemning the breast cancer charity's action.

Today, Senator Murray kept the ball rolling and once again stood up—this time on the Senate floor—to fight for women's healthcare. You can watch her entire speech here, but here's my favorite part:

“On Friday, Komen did the right thing and announced that they had reversed their initial decision—and I want to commend them for that. Because their mission—and their great work in the fight against breast cancer—is just too important to get mixed up in partisan politics.

“But Mr. President, although this reversal was a great victory for so many women across America, let’s be clear: Our fight for women’s health does not end here. There are still many who will continue to put partisan politics ahead of women’s health—and we need to make sure the grassroots support and energy that successfully came together to right this wrong last week, continues to stand firm against each and every attack that comes our way.

“Because Mr. President—we know the attacks are coming. Republicans in the House of Representatives have been waging a war on women’s health since the moment they came into power.

“After campaigning across the country on a platform of jobs and the economy, the first three bills they introduced were direct attacks on women’s health in America. The very first one, H.R. 1, would have totally eliminated Title X funding for family planning and teen pregnancy prevention. And it included an amendment that would have completely defunded Planned Parenthood and cut off support for the millions of women who count on it.

“Another one of their opening round of bills would have permanently codified the Hyde Amendment and the D.C. abortion ban—and the original version of their bill didn’t even include an exception for the health of the mother.

“And finally, they introduced a bill right away that would have rolled back every single one of the gains we made for women in the health care reform bill. The Republican bill would have removed the caps on out-of-pocket expenses that protect women from losing their homes or their life savings if they get sick. It would have ended the ban on lifetime limits on coverage. It would have allowed insurance companies to once again discriminate against women by charging them higher premiums or even denying women care because of so-called pre-existing conditions—like pregnancy.

“And Mr. President—it would have rolled back the guarantee that insurance companies cover contraceptives, which will save the overwhelming majority of women who use them hundreds of dollars a year. We know ensuring access to effective birth control is directly linked to declines in maternal and infant mortality, reduced risk of ovarian cancer, better overall health outcomes for women, and far fewer unintended pregnancies and abortions—which is a goal we all should share."

I am so incredibly proud—and thankful—to have Senator Murray representing me on this issue.

Sadly this is an ongoing battle against hate and ignorance, the war against women is much like the hundred year war or longer.

It is sad but true that the Komen/Planned Parenthood brouhaha was but the visible pimple on the face of healthcare. There is a concerted move by the right to control women with access to care but it doesn't stop there. Organizations that provide free or sliding-scale care for all people are also under attack because they defy market-based ideologies of fee-for-service. Low-cost preventative health provided by public health clinics has been subject to defunding on local, state and federal levels for several years. Under the guise of cutting taxes, services have been axed because Republicans think all health care should be subject to the so-called free market. In their eyes, public health is the road to communism rather than a greater good.

The GOP is scared of women who control their own destiny by controlling when - or if - they become mothers. That goes against their ingrained belief that women are lowly second-class citizens who need "guidance" from men because they are incapable of knowing what is best for them.

Gee, I wish she would have helped us get a public option. Then women would have had somewhere to turn when the corporations and their religious henchpeople come after their healthcare.

Patty is an opportunist. When she she gets rid of the Hyde amendment, I might pay attention.

@8 So are you saying Patty's function is to give cover to the President while he executes compromises that move us backward in the very process she is railing against?

As women we already have access to birth control and abortion. who says its my right to have these services FREE of charge. Who pays for this FREE service?

It's absolutly ridiculous to say that these services are free! We the tax paying American's and the working people of this country are again footing the bill. When has anything been FREE? There's always a catch. You people are not thinking clearly, who is standing up for these unborn babies? What gives you the right to make such a judgment call as to who is to live or die? Our heavenly Father is looking down and you know that their is a tear in his eye whenever the wrong decision is made. God created life not man.

The only thing truthful here is your title. In the latest issue on providing contraception, the issue being argued is RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, a 1st amendment issue. I personally don't have a religious issue about contraception, but I don't like the government telling Catholics they have to violate their conscience, go against their religious beliefs and do something they consider wrong. And I have a lot of trouble respecting people who aren't interested in their 1st amendment rights. As far as Patty Murray goes, she is just being her usual silly self. Nice try Patty.
