Mitt Romney on the Prop 8 Ruling

Posted by on Tue, Feb 7, 2012 at 1:47 PM

Mitt seems mad about the whole thing:

Today, unelected judges cast aside the will of the people of California who voted to protect traditional marriage. This decision does not end this fight, and I expect it to go to the Supreme Court. That prospect underscores the vital importance of this election and the movement to preserve our values. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and, as president, I will protect traditional marriage and appoint judges who interpret the Constitution as it is written and not according to their own politics and prejudices.

Wonder if he's pissed that all the money he donated to the Mormon Church might have gone to waste? Mitt Romney hates bad investments.

"Our" values? And he plans to turn to judges that he appoints (unelected!) for a remedy?

Anyone who uses the phrases "unelected judges" and "will of the people" doesn't understand the constitution.

Mitt Romney is always touting his father George for giving him cred with Mexican voters because George was born in Mexico. What he fails to mention is that George's parents (Mitt's grandparents) went there to preserve their polygamous marriage. George was born in a Mormon colony established to evade the Federal crack-down on polygamous marriage. Hundreds of Mormons fled U.S. territory into Mexico in the late 19th century as the U.S. cavalry prepared to invade Utah and enforce Federal law. Some returned during the Mexican Revolution when things got hot.
George was among these retornos.

And by "Will of the people" he means slightly more than half of the people.

Dear Mitt,
The Justices that serve on the Supreme Court are also "unelected judges" you dumbass

Soooo, does that mean Mittens, if elected, would abrogate his CONSTITUTIONAL imperative to nominate federal & SCOTUS judges for appointment by Congress? Instead he'll advocate for a Constitutional AMENDMENT to have ALL judicial positions elected by "the will of the people" instead?

Who IS this idiot, and why does he keep appearing on my television?

Also interesting is that WHILE HE WAS GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS, MASSACHUSETTS BECAME THE FIRST STATE TO LEGALIZE SAME SEX MARRIAGE.

Anyone else find this interesting?

I just recently watched Hot Coffee and I now have a twitch whenever I read anything about politics and the judicial system. It seems like a no win situation between judges being elected or appointed.

Living here in California... the people are pretty much celebrating this ruling. And we'd kind of like it if people not from around here would stop trying to "protect our will" so much, especially without consulting us. Prop 8 passed (barely) because nobody expected it to pass and we got lazy. We didn't expect the influx of non-native money or the horrible lying propaganda that spread about what would happen if it didn't pass (and yes, lying - I was here, I heard a lot of outright lies stated to try to scare people into voting for it or encourage them to). People were quite upset when it passed, and we want to have it go away. So you politicians from other states please stop pretending to be supporting our will or speaking for us. You're not a Californian. You don't get to vote in California. You are just an obnoxious meddler. Just like all that non-Californian Mormon money trying to destroy our state and meddling with our politics and making us look bad to the rest of the world. Yes, we have a really stupid referendum system of governing, but it's people like Romney that make it even worse.

Paul.
you frequently refer to 'all the money' the mormon church spent on prop 8.
we realize you are just a pathetic hack squeaking in the corner hoping for a little attention and that no one places any credence in any of the shit you vomit up but please cite just how much money the mormon church spent on prop 8.
otherwise stfu.

If his problem is with judicial versus legislative process, then may we assume that when the duly elected representatives of the people of Washington sign off on marriage equality later this week, Mr. Romney will cheer that as a victory for democracy?

"When I am President, I will only appoint activist judges with whom I agree." That's how the GOP has been these past few decades; it's only judicial overreach when it's something they don't like.

@16: Alleged, you asking Constant for citations is like Taco Bell complaining about the integrity of Chipotle's beef.

"I will appoint judges who will interpret the Constitution as written, especially that part about how fags can't get married, and... wait, that's the, uh, the 19th Amendment? Or is it in Clause 4? I, um, shit, I don't know. Anyway I will definitely appoint judges who hate gay people and will do whatever I say, and I, of course, will be a vessel for the will of Moroni. As it must be. None of you can come live on my special planet, especially not the homosexuals."

The phrase "unelected judges" used as a pejorative generally indicates the speaker has a fundamental misunderstanding of the judiciary. It's all part of the checks and balances, the president appoints a judge, the congress approves (note, these are both elected officials) and the judge is free to rule based on the law, not weather or not their opinion is popular with the people to get reelected.

All judges, interpret the constitution as written the problem is there are strict interpretations (only what is said can be done and nothing else) and loose interpretations (as long as it's not banned in the document we're good to go). Neither of these are more correct than the other, both are valid and that's why the judiciary is so important.

"and appoint judges who interpret the Constitution as it is written and not according to their own politics and prejudices."

Does he mean the part where it states that all people should be treated equally under the law? That would be wonderful!
That is all we (pro marriage equality people) are asking for.

re #23: Those of you who don't know yet about Mormon Magic Underwear {which they TRY to keep a BIG SECRET so we non-believers don't laugh at them!}, please look it up {it's also known as Mormon "garments" or "garmies" for short}, in Wikepedia! or elsewhere.

Mormons are supposed to NEVER TAKE IT OFF, even while bathing, sleeping, having sex, etc. {It's got a big hole in it for the Genitals and Excretory System.}
It is supposed to MAGICALLY protect them from Sinning and from car accidents!!! And, Mormons are supposed to keep it a SECRET from outdoors wash-drying lines, laundromats, etc., so we non-believers don't know!
Full-fledged Mormon adults are ALL supposed to wear it at ALL times; so Mitt and other prominent Mormons get no exemptions from wearing it during debates, campaigning, etc.

Since they themselves have chosen to make religion and superstitious religious beliefs a campaign issue, "garmies" and such are FAIR GAME and should be exploited to the MAX! At the end, 100% of the American Electorate ought to know.....
