Jay Inslee Defends Clean Tech: "Of Course There Are Failures"

Posted by on Tue, Feb 7, 2012 at 2:14 PM

It wasn't long after Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Representative Jay Inslee released his jobs plan yesterday, that the Republicans predictably fired back with a statement dissing government's previous efforts to promote clean technology jobs. But it was a critique that Inslee had already parried at his press event.

"We understand one important fact about innovation: It's tough," Inslee explained in response to a question from the Seattle PI's Joel Connelly. "We are creating whole new industries," Inslee continued, "and when we do this, of course there are failures." Inslee made a cogent argument for investing in core new industries as a whole, even though some individual ventures are bound to fail, before going on to challenge "those who don't understand the growth potential" of these industries, to "walk around and talk to the brilliant Washingtonians who are creating whole knew industries today."

Watch the clip. It's pretty positive and upbeat. Inslee has been criticized by some campaign observers for lackluster stump speeches, but as he demonstrated during the Q&A portion of the program, he's often at his best when he's speaking off the cuff.

Fortunately, except for the odd Exxon Valdez or Horizon Deepwater incident, the fossil-fuel industry has a virtually perfect record for success.

Inslee wrote a whole book, "Apollo's Fire" on science and technology and then spent only half a page on hydrogen fuel cells -- the one technology that powered the Apollo command module and Lunar Module to the Moon and back.

Anyone who doesn't understand that the Democratic Party is a party of the 1% isn't really a member. The heads of the DP, Dwight Pelz et al., sit around and decide which corporate whore they can run in every race. Then, they proceed to sell them to idiotic voters (who would vote for Hitler if only he ran as a Democrat) as progressive candidates.

FACT: Pro-corporate Microsoft Democrats like Ross Hunter and DelBene are every bit as responsible for the budget crisis as the Republicans are because they work hard to make sure corporations don't pay taxes. Look at Ross Hunter's fight to make sure Washington loses nearly a billion dollars in tax money from Microsoft. Shame on the Stranger for ignoring this.

Every election between a Democrat and a Republican is a choice between two piles of shit. Please stop voting for shit.

And what gay person in their right mind would vote for a candidate who calls Reagan his hero?

Yes by all means vote for the vegitarian party candidate or something.

Inslee's got my vote. I don't care what the purity trolls think.

He's right, Edison failed a lot before he got the light bulb right. The difference is, Edison didn't need subsidies or a "government liason" to help him.

@6 errr, Edison was financed by JP Morgan who made his money in railroads helped in great part by government land grants and government subsidies.

Let's just fund the shit out of next gen engineering programs at our state schools. Didn't some UW grand student win a prize last year for his device that listened to the hum of electronics. It gave you real time info wherever you were about your power usage. It had some innovated features that really made it easy for consumers to curb their electricity usages.

How much "picking and choosing" did we do with all the bio-tech in seattle?

#4 Wow, Reagan is Inslee's hero? That's seriously fucked up.

So, we have to choose between a neoliberal on Reagan's right and another neolib (?) who thinks that Reagan is to be emulated? Either I am a "purity troll" for wanting a candidate to the left of center or our fellow libs have to pull their heads out.

Anon dear, I'm an old mannequin. I've been hearing people like you sing the same song since 1968. I've sung it myself through more than one election cycle. I suppose I've grown fat and complacent, but I'd happily "pull my head out" if you'd get off your self-righteous derrière and put someone forward who passes your smell test. Until then, it's just the same old tune.

The WA state GOP dependably puts out sleazeballs and/or nutcases for all elected offices - especially Governor. Maybe they make it too easy. But where's your alternative to Inslee? Or are we all just supposed to stay home and pout because he's not exactly what you want, at the exact moment you want it?

It should be Democratic Party policy in the state to run blue-collar candidates, and then make them get out of the way come the legislative session. Gregoire was a tentative step in this direction, but she obviously veered too far right in order to beat Rossi. Inslee talks a good game that will go over most general election voter's heads. Get Dow in to fix this mess, there's no way that McKenna should even be sniffing a lead at this point. Jay should be hoping that a rising Obama tide lifts all boats.

@10 So, according to you, my inability to vote for someone who passes my smell taste implies that I should quietly resign myself to vote for someone who claims that Reagan was his major role model? The logic strikes me as odd.

Inslee has a fair enough voting record in congress but there are some important areas of concern that shouldn't be glossed over (recent FTA's, state income tax, ..). On the contrary, airing it out should make Inslee candidature stronger, unless of course there are aspects of his proposals that he doesn't want progressives to know about.

Yes.

And just where does Jay Inslee call Ronal Reagan a hero? A quick Google of "Jay Inslee Ronald Reagan hero" returns post #4 from this list, a similar vague claim from the Weekly's blog, a vapid quote from Inslee on how NANCY Reagan is a hero to Alhzeimers caregivers (fair enough, in my opinion, even though I despise the woman) and coverage of some sort of event at a VFW or something, where he and someone name Mike Reagan (no, not THAT Mike Reagan) talk about dead soldiers.

Maybe he does idolize Reagan. But if you're going to make an obscure claim, or better yet, be gullible enough to believe something someone apparently pulled out of thin air, at least make up a source.
