Madonna's Halftime Show, Cont.

Posted by on Mon, Feb 6, 2012 at 6:00 AM

Did I see both a slip and a slackline starting at around 3:40?

Who is "Madonna"? Is that the latest Jive Records act, or perhaps a DJ of some sort?

When did music stop being about the music and become a "show?" I must have slept through that.

Is that the right vowel in the last word of this post's title?

In related news, Justin Beiber has been signed to do the Halftime Show of Super Bowl LXXXVI.

@ 2, it started in the "Eighties." At least as far as Madonna is concerned. The most overrated singer of all time, but one who knows how to get you to pay attention.

Actually, I thought the spectacle was pretty good. It's the Super Bowl, so expecting a Prince-level show is asking too much. And Madonna, lip synching and all the other minor flaws aside, is still much better than Up With People. (Or the Black Eyed Peas.)

I agree with Matt. The last few super bowl halftime shows were so awful, I'm glad they got a solid performer in for the day. She was great.

I loved it. The Super Bowl is watched by over 100 million people worldwide. The halftime show should be larger than life. No one wants to watch an acoustic bluegrass band perform on barstools. This years was one of the best. Very athletic and some amazing dance moves.

I also love Madonna. She is an amazing woman -- performer, entrepreneur, dancer, philanthropist -- and at 53 she looks amazing and is full of energy. Plus I love what she has done for the LGBT community.

PS I wonder what the folks in the deep south thought about the end of the performance -- a mixture of spirituality and sensuality with a message of peace.

@6: I grew up evangelical, and Madonna was despised for mixing spirituality and sensuality. Definitely considered especially depraved.

I think Madonna is too old to be doing Madonna's act. It's just a bit desperate and tragic. Cheerleader moves? Really?

No one is ever too old to do anything that they can physically accomplish.

Agree, she's always been overrated. Just knew how to walk over people to get to the top.
Looked stiff and awkward last night.

They haven't been universally abysmal in recent years. More misses than hits certainly, but then appeal is subjective, and they're aiming at a wide cross section of midwestern 'murica. I enjoyed springsteen & tom petty, both in the past decade.

@9 - True, but you will probably look like Ann Poehler's character in Mean Girls while flailing about.

@2: So you've been asleep at least since glam rock of the late 70s.

@9- I think she was too old to do that routine in those heels. She almost fell once and just looked awkward a lot.

I didn't care for her choice of the earlier songs, but I enjoyed "Like a Prayer." Madonna wouldn't have been my first choice by any means but compare her to the 1991 lineup and she starts looking pretty good.

It's the Super Bowl, so expecting a Prince-level show is asking too much.

Matt, Prince's show was my favorite in recent memory (although they should have booked him for the 1999 game.) I liked Springsteen's show too but, compared to the times I've seen him in person, it came up short. Plus, I know "Glory Days" is a huge fan favorite, and was an obvious choice for the Super Bowl, but it's one of my least-favorite songs of his.

It would be interesting to see a ranking of all the halftime shows by Super Bowl fans. From Wikipedia, here they are going back to 1990. I'd forgotten that the earlier shows were mostly multiple acts.

2012 Madonna
2011 Black Eyed Peas
2010 The Who
2009 Springsteen
2008 Tom Petty
2007 Prince
2006 The Stones
