Lunchtime Quickie: Michigan Candidate Makes Not-So-Subtle Anti-Chinese Ad

Posted by on Mon, Feb 6, 2012 at 12:02 PM

Sometimes I'm proud to be a Michigan native. Other times, eh, not so much. Nice yellow shirt. Oh, and great graphic design...

Maybe it's just me, but she looks more Thai or Laotian..? He could have been more convincing, maybe dressed her in a tunic and Mao hat.

Good thing she won the battle over the fake buck teeth. That could have been viewed as racist.

No green cap with a red star on it?

I'm disappointed.

Hmm, stereotyping Asians in Michigan. What can possibly go wrong?

Kelly O., here's something you can be proud of--African American ministers, recognizing that old saw about an injury to one is an injury to all, have spoken out against this.

I lived in Michigan for about 6 months. During that time I ran my car off an offramp. Some guy gave me a ride to work. He explained to me I should be getting a real car (his was a Cadillac, mine was Toyota). Then said something like: "You remember 9/11, right? Well I remember Pearl Harbor, too."

Michigan is also the only state where I've been told that the old line that Social Security and retirement weren't necessary before the big bad gummint got involved, which is all sorts of perverse sense of history.

True story.

Asians are a novelty in the Midwest. There's about as many Asians out there as there are black people north of the south end of Seattle out here.

It's worth noting the guy who's running the add was in Congress when the Bush tax cuts created the current massive deficit the racist advertisement is attempting to link his opponent with. What an asshole.

"Ching chong ching chong rice Mao fortune cookie." Not racist either!

No obvious dig at chinese riding bicycles?

That ad is a subconscious goldmine of american knee-jerk politics.

@12, you're not suggesting that someone who's not only flagrantly racist, but willing to promote his particular brand of racism for political gain, might also be dishonest?

I mean, I feel you. You're right. At this point, though, it's a little like saying that not only was Charles Manson a psychopath, he also had poor personal grooming habits

Good lord that's disgusting and I'll be glad when Pete Hoekstra loses.

Maybe it's just me, though, but I feel like that actress deserves some blame/shame for appearing in this ad. You can argue "If she didn't someone else would!" but then I'd just say that person deserves shame/blame, so that doesn't really work.

If someone offered to pay me to appear in a racist ad against white people I'd say "No way, Jose!" (because he'd probably be latino), "I'm very proud of what my people have given the world; cheeseburgers, muzak and musical theater!"

The broken English with a California accent reminds me of the actress in Rambo 2:

Whatever. Maybe the ad is racist and maybe not. Nice view anyway if you play it with the volume off.

Re: 12, Pete Hoekstra also voted in 1999 for permanent most-favored-nation status for China, which was of course very useful in outsourcing jobs to China.

@10: In the Plains states, sure, but not in the Great Lakes region, particularly not in the Detroit area. I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and 50% of my high school graduating class was Asian-American.

Of course, Hoekstra (the candidate who made this ad) is from lily-white Holland, MI, on the opposite end of the state.
