It May Be (Unusually) Warm in Seattle Right Now, But It's Negative One Million Degrees in Eastern Europe

Posted by on Mon, Feb 6, 2012 at 5:26 PM

It's resulted in grounded flights, many deaths, and an awful lot of beautiful photos. Photos 3, 19, and 31 are the most beautiful, probably, though there's something to be said for 27.

Meanwhile, Seattle looks like this:

I hate it when Seattle gets all sideways like that...

Everything just slid off my desk!!

But seriously, we are fixing it. Why do iPhones always do this?

It is often nice in February in Seattle.

It used to be that each time you took a picture with an iPhone, the phone corrected the orientation as it was saving. That takes a lot of number crunching, so in an effort to speed it up they changed it so it saves the picture sideways (or upside-down, or however you took it) and throws a tag in the picture's metadata that says, "by the way, this picture should be viewed rotated 90 degrees to the right" (or whatever the correction needs to be).

Your mac knows how to read that tag, which is why it looks right when you're looking at it at your desk, but once it flies out onto the internet that tag is lost, and that's why sideways pictures.

Oh, come on, 2 or more metres of snow never hurt anyone ...

But seriously, have you looked at photo 27?

On the bright side, it still looks like a good water year, at least for the Cascades. Central and Eastern WA is a bit iffy.

That's all cold and stuff, but when I was going to Michigan State the ONLY day they closed the University in 100 years was the day it hit -40 F. A group of students assembled outside the president's residence and chanted "hell no, it's 40 below!" and we got the day off. Of course we all ran around outside and played in the snow. -40 ain't all that.

That said, my condolences to those who dies or lost friends & relatives to the cold snap.

In Fairbanks they go outside in bikinis and take pictures next to thermometers when it gets to -40.

Beautiful and heartbreaking photos. I can only imagine what's happening to the homeless in Hungary with the current governments anti-homeless crusade/harassment.

Hungary makes homelessness a crime punishable by a fine of around $600 (£ 384) or prison in a move condemned by charities. http://tiny.cc/hr97w from the BBC

Interesting that the photo in Sarajevo is accompanied by reference to the Serbian state of emergency. It's almost as if the person who wrote the caption mistakenly though the Bosnia war turned out differently...
