Women Stood Up, Komen Sat Down

Posted by on Fri, Feb 3, 2012 at 9:11 AM

But Komen, for the record, has lost any support I might have given it. I'll be donating directly to cancer research, not funneling through Komen. Ever.

Just since you brought up donating to cancer research, make sure you stay away from the American Cancer Society. They have done all sorts of stupid shit over the years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Ca… will get you annoyed quickly.

Agreed. Nothing for Komen. But I still want to see some resignations and firings of the suicide bombers responsible for their PR disaster.

I would also hesitate to donate $$$ to an organization that allowed itself to be swayed by blatant political bullying. Their decision to defund PP was shocking. It's going to take some time for people to trust them again.

What everyone else said. Donation to PP made, emails to Karen Handel sent, explaining why. The pink handgun thing was really what showed how Komen, Inc is all about raking in profits now.

Read their weasel words carefully: they won't stop funding of Planned Parenthood this year, but have set up new new criteria that will exclude PP from funding from here on in.

My aunt passed away from breast cancer less than 2 years ago. I will never do another "Race for the Cure" or give a cent to Komen. All money I give in my aunt's honor will be given to PP. I can't give much since I'm poor but what I can will be given to an organization that I feel proud to stand behind.

Donate to St. Baldrick's!

The local fundraising event is on March 8th at Fado. I'm shaving my head to raise money. The organization’s priorities of awareness include both prevention (reducing late effects by changing current therapies) and intervention (treating patients who already have late effects).
They are a very transparent organization! http://www.stbaldricks.org/about-us/

As far as I've been able to make out, Komen didn't say they would restore funding to Planned Parenthood. They said that Planned Parenthood would be invited to apply for funding from Komen. There's certainly no guarantee that PP would get funding because the dumbasses who made this decision in the first place are still going to decide who gets the funding.

I can't figure out 1. Why did they intentionally create this shitstorm or 2. Why no one in the national office thought this would create this shitstorm.

if recent events lead people to donate more "directly" that's a good thing in and of itself. Big charities are bloated, wasteful, and inherently bureaucratic (and often highly politicized) almost without exception - I always donate as close to the work/goal itself as possible, and to as small and specific an outfit as can be found - and I don't really see any large organizations who can really make the most effective use of the money.

As with business, once it becomes so big the tendency is for it to be about itself rather than what it does.

@15 you are right, and they are using uninquisitive newspeople to spread the word: "Women [sic] Stood Up, Komen Sat Down [sic]" just in time for the race where they will find a cure.

Jen jen, you should always do your due diligence first, and therefore never have even considered giving Komen any bucks whatsoever, nor any other neocon scam.

Study the history of foundations, study the history behind the circumvented Walsh Commission, and the vile and despicable Peterson Commission (the Commission on Foundations).

Breaking and beautiful news:

A.G. SCHNEIDERMAN ANNOUNCES MAJOR LAWSUIT AGAINST NATION’S LARGEST BANKS FOR DECEPTIVE & FRAUDULENT USE OF ELECTRONIC MORTGAGE REGISTRY

“The banks created the MERS system as an end-run around the property recording system, to facilitate the rapid securitization and sale of mortgages. Once the mortgages went sour, these same banks brought foreclosure proceedings en masse based on deceptive and fraudulent court submissions, seeking to take homes away from people with little regard for basic legal requirements or the rule of law,” said Attorney General Schneiderman. “Our action demonstrates that there is one set of rules for all – no matter how big or powerful the institution may be – and that those rules will be enforced vigorously. Only through real accountability for the illegal and deceptive conduct in the foreclosure crisis will there be justice for New York’s homeowners.”

Gee, did any men sign petitions, write letters, or donate to Planned Parenthood in Komen's name?

Agreed.

Komen's loss of 'goodwill' over this debacle is going to be incalculable.

Of course, they could continue their current levels of funding towards a cure if they would only pare down some of those astronomical executive salaries - how is it in any way right for the head of a national charity to be taking nearly half-a-million dollars a year from said charity?

I'll bet you that the vast majority of folks who DID donate to Komen in the past had no idea they were supporting fat cats at the top -- right-wing douchebaggy fat cats, at that.

WELL THEY DO NOW!!

I've always given Komen the stinkeye - there've been stories about them percolating for years, that they basically work to suppress a lot of good research, spend their time sending Cease and Desist orders to organizations that have the temerity to use the word "cure" or a pink ribbon in their logos, pay their execs absurd salaries, and in general, have a very right-wing bias. If you want to support an organization locally that does good things for cancer patients, consider Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

Grrr. I have always hated that goddamn pink ribbon. It is soooo fuckin cutesy. And breast cancer is not cute. Now I finally have a good reasons to come out in the open with my antipathy for the organization, not to mention its corporate sponsors.
