Komen Reverses Decision to End Grants to Planned Parenthood

Posted by on Fri, Feb 3, 2012 at 8:30 AM

At least, that's what the AP is reporting. Developing...

UPDATE: Dom's got a link to the Komen foundation's official statement.

Had Komen held to its original decision, Republicans in congress would have been emboldened to hold firm to their demands to fully defund Planned Parenthood. But now, after this massive show of popular support, you can be pretty sure that it is Democrats who are emboldened to have Planned Parenthood's back.

But to be clear, this isn't just a huge victory for Planned Parenthood in particular, and women in general. This is a huge victory for the broader progressive community, in that it finally got its shit together to effectively push back against the creeping right-wing conspiracy.

Activism works. Who knew?

Yes, yay internet! But then there's this story, about Komen pulling funding for stem cell research grants: http://www.care2.com/causes/susan-g-kome…

CNN's reporting it too. I agree w/ all the above, though. No more donations from me.

I think the damage is done. How can anyone donate money to that non-profit when at any time they can be strong armed into dropping support for any other group.

Status update from the "De-fund The Komen Foundation" facebook page:

Morning everyone! In light of the "breaking news" that Komen has reversed its decision: PLEASE WAIT TO CELEBRATE.

The official statement issued was that they will "honor existing grants" (which only means they won't demand the already granted money back) and that PP is free to apply again in the future - to which Handel already stated publicly yesterday that even if they apply again, they are unlikely to give them anymore grants due to much of PP's mammography services being referrals to off-site radiology labs and that they are, quote: "moving away from 'pass-through' services."

As the story develops, we'll keep you posted.

It's kind of a weaselly backing down, as mr. herriman points out. (Thanks for posting that!)

Read their weasel words carefully: they won't stop funding of Planned Parenthood this year, but have set up new new criteria that will exclude PP from funding from here on in.

No, they're just pouring on more pinkwashing. No grants to PP have been restored; only the "possibility" of applying for them.

Still no word on the Penn State grant, which is also to an organization under administrative investigation.

This is just a PR stunt to take the heat off. They have no intention to fund PP in the future. The statement from Komen makes no promise to do so. Also no mention of the stem cell research cutoff. This is a smokescreen and we must keep the pressure going. Donate to PP, demand the firing of Karen Handel.
