Posted by on Fri, Feb 3, 2012 at 9:30 AM

What i find reprehensible in an organization which is supposedly dedicated to ending breast cancer is the Komen org's politicization of treatment and research. They have also defunded grants for research using stem cells. Stem cell treatments may well prove to be the most efficacious treatment modality against cancers of all kinds and Komen doesn't want to be part of it. They need to come clean with the public about their political and religious leanings.

Komen hasn't "reversed" anything. The existing policy is still in place. The existing grants will expire and not be renewed.

They revoked all grants for embryonic stem cell research. Planned Parenthood will be no different.

Elsewhere-

"Komen's "investigation" coverup is pretty hypocritical, given that another poster found this information the day the story broke:

KFC is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Ford is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Bank of America is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
American Airlines is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Caterpillar is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Nestle is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Egglands Best is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Yoplait is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Dell is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Major League Baseball is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Lowes is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Merck is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them

AND

ASCO is under investigation...Komen gives $ to them
AACR is under investigation...Komen gives $ to them
WHO is under investigation...Komen gives $ to them

In fact EVERY corporate partner checked except Hallmark Cards Stores was under some sort of investigation and every organization they gave grants to was as well"

Also Penn State, under investigation for their knowledge of systemic child rape, but PP had some derpwad dance around in a halloween pimp suit, so obviously this is more worthy of concern.

"Give us money or we will destroy you."

Actually, our position should simply be, "We will destroy you." Restoring funding to PP isn't enough to make Komen not a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad organization. Unless they're going to cut ties with ALL unethical corporate interests (cancer-causing and not, which amounts to pretty much all corporate interests), abandon ineffective fundraising tactics, and cut their operational budget to the minimal effective level (stop profiteering), they continue to be undeserving of our support or funding.

@6: They haven't restored funding to PP. All new grants are still to be denied.

I agree with the rest, though. PP is but one of many reasons to destroy Komen and the "Awareness" industry.

Putting $160,000 into lobbying against the the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act because it provides federal funding relating for breast care education and "competes" with their "nonprofit".

Yet another sign about their true concerns, their staff's wallets.

@4 - Spot on.

"We support the ending of breast cancer - but only on our terms. Because JESUS."

Oh eff them so hard and thoroughly.

And they're still opposing the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act - a bill that will create an oversight panel to focus research funding on a streamlined agenda to create a breast cancer vaccine and to find a way to stop breast cancer metastasis.

I don't know, because the Pharmaceuticals it represents and the Truly Free Market can do it better than Big Government or some shit.

Just more lies. They probably hired a different crisis advisor who told them to just apologize and it could all go away... and they wouldn't event have to change a thing. assholes.

I donated money to Komen over ten years ago. Shortly thereafter, I found out that, not only does Komen deny a link between toxic chemicals and breast cancer* and thus refuse to fund research into it, the organization also spends lobbying dollars to keep Congress from funding such research. I gave up on them a long time ago; although that didn't stop me from sending them an email this time around saying that I won't donate to them again.

*It has been conclusively proven that estrogen causes breast cancer. Many toxic chemicals mimic estrogen. You do the math.

Komen's board members are telling antichoice activists not to worry, nothing's changed.

Komen hasn't changed worth shit. The same radical right wingers are still in control. With the hundreds of millions of dollars at their disposal they will continue to try to exert their will, if only with a bit more subtleness. The cat is out of the bag and will be hard to push back in.

Part of it is that so much of what Komen was doing was getting very disturbing already. The pink handgun PR campaign is a great example of how removed they are from their supposed original mission.

@13 Thanks Kesmeshi. Got any links? This is a great time to get people to think seriously about Komen's stance on environmental factors and cancer.

@17,

I found this Mother Jones article that shows how Komen downplays the links, although it says that Komen does fund research into BPAs. I just read an article yesterday about how Komen lobbied against a law putting money toward researching the link. I'll keep looking for it.

@17,

Actually I think the better term is *denies* that there's any link.

@17,

This is the article that I read:

They worked for several years to stall or kill the Breast Cancer & Environmental Research Act. In the end, they eviscerated it by removing new funding for environmental research and substituting a panel to review all research on breast cancer & environment.

I can imagine all the lobbyists lined up to kill that research, but it's dismaying that Komen joined in. Even if they'd rather focus on early detection and "awareness", what is their dog in this fight? Why would they actively oppose new research into chemical exposure?

But, even more damning:

Breast & Cervical Cancer Prevention & Treatment Act. The bill was to provide Medicaid coverage for uninsured women diagnosed through the Breast & Cervical Cancer Prevention & Screening Act, which had been passed several years earlier. IOW, the Treatment Act was necessary because uninsured women were getting no-cost breast cancer diagnosis, but still had no means to pay for treatment...

She told me that Komen opposed the bill. When I asked her why, she explained that Komen felt that treatment for uninsured breast cancer patients should be funded through private donations, like the pink ribbon race...

A phone call to another activist confirmed it was true - Komen was lobbying behind the scenes to kill the bill.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dan! I was waiting for someone to point out that they didn't really reverse their stand. My guess is that, amazingly, PP will not get future grants they apply for...

We shouldn't be surprised that organizations that don't have their constituencies best interests at heart will band together. Right now SGK is crying about how the board's imperiousness has been thwarted/rejected. They should be crying about the cause they abandoned, and the promises they broke.

In the mean time, does anyone have any alternative candidates to send into the fight against breast cancer?

Peace.

They are lobbyists. They do not want Federal funds going to womens' health.
