Abortion Stops a Beating Heart

Posted by on Fri, Feb 3, 2012 at 5:35 AM

You know else does that? One of these babies:

happinessisawarmfetus.jpeg

Discount Gun Sales is proud to team up with the Susan B. Koman Foundation to offer the Walther P-22 Hope Edition in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A portion of each P-22 Hope Edition will be donated to the Seattle Branch of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The P-22 Hope Edition has an exclusive DuraCoat Pink slide in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

So... the rightwing douchehags who run Komen for the Cure are cutting off Planned Parenthood—and killing poor women—because they're so dang pro-life it hurts. (But it only hurts poor women, so who gives a shit, right?) But Komen is bringing out a pink breast-cancer-awareness-raising HANDGUN because nothing says LIFE like a product specifically designed to stop a beating heart. But it's a breast-cancer awareness gun so women can also use it to blow away any worrisome lumps they might find in their breasts. (Biopsies are for wimps!)

Terry and I made a $250,000 donation to Planned Parenthood yesterday—no, wait. That was Michael Bloomberg, New York's billionaire Republican mayor. We gave $500 to Planned Parenthood.

Please give what you can.

UPDATE: A detail from this morning's must-read NYT editorial:

In addition to harming women, the foundation has also tarnished, perhaps permanently, its brand, symbolized by the pink ribbon that adorns yogurt cups and running shoes and tote bags and Federal Premium Ammunition’s pink shotgun shells. Companies like Ford Motor, Dell and Yoplait may not find the same value in identifying themselves with the foundation after its sharp departure from political neutrality.

Pro-life shotgun shells?

Some beating hearts deserve to be stopped.

Having just read through my neighborhood blogs about robberies, burglaries and drive-by shootings in Seattle leaves me particularly unmoved by your attempt to besmirch SPKF.

Their buckling on support for Planned Parenthood is more than sufficient to merit withdrawing my support for the Foundation.

Bloomberg is the kind of Republican I respect.

Bloomberg's donation is a matching one. He'll donate $1 for every $1 raised for PP of America, up to $250 000. So, his donation is only that big if we all donate too!

A breast cancer gun?!? Seriously?

I think Komen Foundation just became PETA.

The people who support Komen's decision can't call themselves pro-life. They're pro-unborn fetus or pro-"only the lives I think are important". They don't care about saving lives, they care about passing judgment.

corporations love SGKF because their pinkwashing burnishes anything - guns, ammo, the NFL.

It looks like a water gun.

I donated $50 and sent the acknowledgement to Karen Handel. I recommend anyone who hasn't donated yet to do the same. I don't have the address on hand. I think I got it from Daily Kos.

Read their weasel words carefully: they won't stop funding of Planned Parenthood this year, but have set up new new criteria that will exclude PP from funding from here on in.

Bloomberg's an Independent. Dude's so not a Republican. As evidenced by all his lobbying for gay marriage and his money giving to PP and his not taking a salary for being mayor. Oh wait, I think he gets paid a dollar b/c in NYC it's illegal for the mayor to not accept a salary.

@8, Look at Mexico. Guns are illegal, but the cartels of course are armed to the teeth. And so the politicians are now considering legalizing gun ownership, so that criminals aren't the only ones with the power to defend themselves.

I'm pretty sure that gun would be illegal in NYC. There's a law re: making real guns look fake. I think the pink counts as making a real gun look fake. Not that that would stop criminals but it's an extra charge you can tack onto their charges when prosecuting (a) gun crime(s).

@4 Were you not paying attention to the illegal shit that piece of shit pulled against Occupy? The mass arrests, the police brutality, arresting journalists, blocking journalists from covering events, etc etc etc? For people who care about Occupy's cause, that lil' bastard has permanently lost the ability to garner any of our respect.

@25 You're right, the US is Mexico. And all those citizens illegally crossing the border into Canada! Our problems are exactly the same.

@26: I believe that would be called a gateway gun. It's pink, so Boobies! And it's a .22LR, which means it's for the plinking of bottles, the inaccurate shooting of targets, and generally making the shooter feel comfortable with handguns.
Next stop, a Desert Eagle .44 and an inexplicable ear for Ted Nugent. Then heroin. Then bestiality.

I live in New York. Don't fall for that POS Reich Bloomberg's charm offensive. He wouldn't be doing this except for the fact that his approval rating is around 16% and he desperately needed to buy some good PR. By all means donate to max his matching donation. But this putz is the worst mayor since Guiliani--he's done nothing to police Wall Street and instead sends his jackbooted thugs swinging billy clubs and pepper spray into Zuccoti. The "education mayor" installed a rich lady friend from magazine publishing to fix the schools where she promptly told parents to use birth control to fix school overcrowding. He's the biggest proponent of the nanny state we've ever seen, banning smoking everywhere and telling poor people to cut down on sugary drinks because he's tired of public health care having to foot the bill for their obesity problems. Marijuana arrest this past year equaled all the arrests of the past 20 years COMBINED. Everyone in NYC hates his stolen third term guts and can't wait until his nasal whine retires for good to the Bermuda home he jets too each weekend. Plutocrat putz.

I think it's a brilliant idea: I bought a box of pink 12 gauge shotty shells. I also bought my GF a pink pepper spray and told her she can raise awareness and possibly cure breast cancer while fending off an attacker!

I wanted to get her a revolver too, but I think I'll buy her this semi-auto instead... Thank you The Stranger for keeping me posted! Y'all need a guns column.. It could be multi-purpose, both for people that actually like guns, and it could stand to help galvanize people that are anti-gun. I volunteer for the job, just let me know:)

Actually, maybe not... It's a .22lr, which might insult my GF, as if I'm giving her a small caliber because she's a woman... Better get a 9mm or .38spl for her!

@26: it would be illegal in NYC because guns are illegal in NYC.

Pink and pearl-handled firearms have been marketed and sold to women gun-buyers for years and years.

Frankly, I don't see this pink gun as really a commentary on anything. I am only disturbed by the rather sexist and gender-enforcing use of the color pink in order to market anything to women, which existed in firearms before this and existed in society before it was a thing in the gun world.

I'm not really understanding the negative reaction about the gun partnership.

@25- I do believe you've got it backwards. Mexico City just this week passed a law making it illegal for anyone besides the cops or a registered security contractor to carry.

For the record the Walther P 22 is a SHIT pistol, in a caliber that is only good for shooting paper and squirrels, I am saying this as a Walther fan boy, I carry a Walther P99 in .40

@26 all guns are illegal in NYC

@8 YES and there are statistics to back it up, more armed citizens means less crime. About 1 in 20 Washingtonians is licensed to carry a concealed pistol, let's compare our to that of Illinois where only criminals carry guns.
Posted by Cascadian Bacon on February 3, 2012 at 7:59 PM
Captain Wiggette 43
@42: No, actually globally there is basically zero correlation between an armed population and crime or violence.

Pretty much anyone on either side of the debate will try to claim that guns either correlate with low crime rates or high crime rates, when the reality is both positions are 100% completely unmitigated bullshit.

And for the record, if firearm possession correlated with public safety, then the USA would be by far the safest country in the planet, with the lowest crime rates anywhere.

Unfortunately, we actually have the highest prison population anywhere in the world, and staggeringly high levels of specifically gun-related violence.

I'm not anti-gun, but the suggestion that guns prevent violence or crime in any systemic way or are any kind of reasonable solution to poverty and crime is complete bullshit.

As far as your opinion on the particular pistol, .22LR is not a good defensive round, however it is long-renowned for its killing abilities by many a police department and trauma unit. In many instances, the lowly .22 playing pinball inside your chest cavity can be a *lot* more fatal than the larger caliber rounds that are commonly carried. Not a good defensive round, but if you wanted to kill somebody, a .22 is not a terrible choice. I've seen several cases of individuals shot very dead with .22s that they likely would have walked away from if it had been a common .40 or .45ACP hollow point.
