Countdown to Seattle and Dubai

Posted by on Fri, Feb 3, 2012 at 8:14 AM

Seen from a seat in the wildly heterogenous 7 bus...

MHM_1120202152802-1.jpeg

Flights will leave Seattle daily at 5:10 p.m. and take 14 hours and 30 minutes to reach Dubai—this is as close as we will ever get to space travel. You can either stay at that point (the Las Vegas of the Arab of the world) or fly to one of a hundred destinations.

The billboard is located near the border between homogenous Seattle and heterogenous Seattle. The 7 bus that passed the billboard when the image was captured only had two white passengers.

Don't read too much into the geography, Charles. The same billboard has been in rotation on Elliot right next to the Holland America Cruise Line HQ, arguably the whitest global business in Seattle.

Isn't the other Seattle also rather homogenous?

I love the number 7. The first time I saw a naked man was on the number 7.

If you can hack the LA-Sydney non-stop, you can do Seattle-Dubai standing on your head.

I'm curious to know more about who will fly on this. I assume it's mostly locals looking for a better way back to India or Pakistan? I suppose it's convenient for parts of Africa too. And the stray oil exec headed to Kuwait or Saudi. But there can't really be Seattlites who want to go to Dubai itself, can there?

Maybe white southerners who really miss slavery?

Good Morning Charles,
Earlier this week in my morning paper, I saw a full page ad for Emirites Airlines and said to myself "Wow, there must be many people in Seattle interested in going to Dubai, UAE. Guess a direct route is necessary". Personally, I have no real desire to go there. However, since they erected the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa a visit intrigues me.

@6 For some real lolz check out the custom forms for entering the UAE, you have to agree to be executed and/or punished under sharia law for any infractions before entering.

IE: you had it coming

Unless I can climb up the exterior of that hotel while wearing high-tech gripping gloves, I'm not interested.

To explain, this kind of commentary in the last paragraph does nothing except attempt to incite divisiveness. Why do we need to single out whites on the bus? Didn't we have a huge thing about NOT singling out people based on race on the bus several decades ago?

You have a persecution complex or something.

@20, no, he has an awareness complex. The divisiveness is already there, don't you think?

@17, I couldn't agree more. You should visit your "peeps" in Dubai. The immigration agent desperately wants to hear your theories about Islam, trust me. Don't worry, I hear execution by firing squad is pretty quick.

@21 - I don't deny that the divisiveness is already there, I just question why Charles feels the need to mention how few white people are on the bus. It adds nothing to the story and only serves to exacerbate the existing issue.
