Who Knew the Washington State Senate Was an Episode of Modern Family?

Posted by on Thu, Feb 2, 2012 at 6:00 AM

They look like a pretty bland bunch. But based on last night's wonderful, heartfelt gay marriage vote speeches, I now know that our state senators include:

- a son of a gay man

- a woman in an interracial marriage

- a majority leader whose sister is in a big gay relationship

- a straight Republican who thinks gay marriage is conservative

- a conservative Democrat who loves his gay army buddies so much that he'll vote against the will of his district for them

- a gay Roman Catholic in an LTR without children

- and a straight pot activist who can't figure out how the gays could possibly hurt her marriage

I love sharing time in the state senate!

(And I know I'm not an elected official or anything, but here's an idea: Maybe if you state legislators opened up about your families—and your feelings, and your lives as they're actually lived—more often, we wouldn't have to wait so long for this kind of progress.)

A heartfelt thanks to everyone who has worked to get this done. Liberty and equality are alive and well do to your efforts.

I live in Louisiana, not Washinton, but I give my most grateful thanks to all of the courageous, loving and fair-minded senators who voted for this bill. You have set an example for the rest of the nation.

Unfortunately opening up their families also leaves them open to attack. I don't blame them for doing the most they can to shield their loved ones.

Good for the Senate. So proud.

“The tyranny of the majority” is precisely why we cherish our representative democracy -except this is going to go to a state-wide vote anyway.

I want to feel happy for our state, but I feel so dejected. Between a budget that persecutes the poor in favor of the rich and equal marriage rights that will be up to a public vote, I am so frustrated with this system.

Why can’t “conservatives” remember why they’re against universal healthcare? They yell and scream about “constitution!!!” and “original intent!!!” but conveniently ignore their own tirades when they want to be tyrannical.

I want to go back to bed.

@ 4, it is frustrating, but these are how the battle lines have been drawn. Conservatives have long been packing the courts with their acolytes and preventing fair-minded jurists from taking the bench, because they lost so much under the Warren and Berger courts. The initiative processes of all 50 states have become the special-interests' go-to option, and they have a long-established network for getting the bigots out to vote.

As much as people like to claim that rights simply exist, they actually only exist when enough people agree that they exist. All the past and present injustices regarding majority vs minority rights all existed because the majority agreed that the minority didn't deserve them, and all changed when the majority changed its mind. Women only became equals when enough men agreed that they were; racial minorities only became equals with whites when enough whites agreed that they were; and now LGBT rights are becoming reality because enough straight people agree that they should.

It's sad and disgusting to think about. But if you look at how equality and rights went from rich white men to all adults, those battles were all fought and resolved differently but became possible because the ignorance of the majority was overcome.

We can see that the ignorance of straight people is being overcome, a little bit more every day. Polls show that a majority of Americans support marriage equality, and the trend is toward more and more acceptance. When you have this going for you, victory is assured.

That doesn't mean that there won't be more battles, or that there won't be any more setbacks. But... I'm optimistic that this will prevail at Washington's ballot box. I'm sorry that it's going to come for a vote at all, but the bigots were able to choose the battleground, so it's up to everyone to be ready for it.

As soon as someone gets a No On The Marriage Revocation Initiative group going, I've got $100 to give.

Yes, the tyranny of the majority. The civil rights of a minority should not be subjected to the will of the majority. It isn't their purview.

Thank you to all the Senators who shared their stories. I believe it's been said, here and there, but one of the best ways to soften the hearts (where remotely possible) of gay marriage opponents is to share a personal story. To say, here I am, talking to you, and this is my situation and what gay marriage means to me.

Again, thank you all. This vote means a lot.

Another Louisianian celebrating vicariously with you. I would love it if one of our legislative bodies would share stories like this, but they are generally too busy trying to out-redneck and out-good ol' boy each other.

And I love that people crossed party lines. That wouldn't happen here, either.

One thing very important to note here, is the CIVILITY of the entire discussion. {Even one opponent of the bill asking emotionally for forgiveness from his colleagues!} Everyone was treating everyone else with RESPECT.
Each and every Senator received literally THOUSANDS of communications, letters, postcards, e-mails, phone calls, personal visits...... Seattle Gay News made the strong plea that we contact our legislators RESPECTFULLY and not call them "bigots" and the like. That, along with the heartfelt personal stories, was, I am SURE, among the reasons for the BIGGER-THAN-EXPECTED vote in favor!
"Honey catches more flies than vinegar does."
With the huge money spent on relentless Repuglican Attack Ads, it stands to reason people are SICK of the Negativity and Name-calling! This will be sure to BACKFIRE in the coming elections, wait and see! The Public is sick-to-death of yelling that gets us no-where; that is a digging-your-own-grave strategy from here on out.

Watch the Anti-Marriage-Equality Cults BURY THEMSELVES with negativity and dis-respect!
ALWAYS stick to the high road! On all issues, by the way.
We KNOW that wins -- and doesn't leave a bad taste on anyone's lips.
