"What a long-winded lie."

Posted by on Thu, Feb 2, 2012 at 4:50 PM

This video, "Straight Talk from Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, Founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen," appeared on Komen for the Cure's Youtube channel yesterday, and it's worth a gander (as are the outraged Youtube comments, one of which I appropriated for the title of this post).

What strikes me most about Brinker's speech—other than the fact that she never mentions Planned Parenthood by name—was that she (and other Komen officials) keep repeating the talking point that these changes to introduce "more stringent eligibility and performance criteria... will affect any number of long-standing partners."

But I haven't been able to find evidence of any other long-standing Komen partners stepping forward and claiming that their grants are in jeopardy. And like many of my colleagues here at The Stranger, I've tried to contact Komen for the Cure Puget Sound repeatedly over the past few days to find out if any other local organizations are at risk of having their funding cut "phased out." But no one from our local Komen affiliate—not Communications Manager Jim Clune, Advocacy Director Elisa Del Rosario, Director of Development Gail Lapasin, or Executive Director Cheryl Shaw—have been answering their phones or email (not even the office's receptionist).

In fact, it appears that everyone from Komen for the Cure Puget Sound has been rendered either spineless or speechless.

UPDATE: mr. herriman points out that the new Komen policies also prohibit funding to be used on stem cell research. So, uh, there.

Can we add Komen to the "Enemies of SLOG" list?

Oh, she still styles herself "Ambassador", does she? Fucking sham.

It's cover, so people who don't want to think too much about it can continue to deny they're taking a stand on women's health care.

Komen is dead as soon as some other organization with brass ovaries steps up to replace the funding.

OK, now that's definitely a Third Reicher.

Svartalf shall once again be called into action:

Herr Brinker, indeed!

Well, to be fair (not that I'm interested), "zero" and "one" fall within "any number."

That said, GAAAAAH! That's pretty much how I imagine Mitt Romney would look in drag.

One more facelift and she'll really resemble that cat-faced lady.
Disingenuous BS is all that I heard in her "statement".

Ummm...is it me, or is Nancy Brinker now a dead ringer for Jack Nicholson's Joker in Batman??

I'm not sure what relevance stem-cell therapy has to cancer treatment, and I rather doubt Komen was ever approached to fund stem-cell research.

Of course, it's especially when the wingers exert themselves ban things that don't even exist that they show their true colors ...

Phony is as phony does. That Pompadour/ponytail combo is certainly an odd style choice. Perhaps it covers a big knot of skin that's been pulled up from her face. It's probably gathered up with a thick rubber band. She imagine that she resembles a shar-pei when she lets it down at night. Planned Parenthood has received a big influx of cash from people who have decided to do away with the dissembling middle-women. Is this comment "scurrilous" enough?

8: Holy crap, Bride of the Joker is right. Did she actually pay someone do that to her?

I've never been a big fan of Komen since I saw how much they get for administration...and this boneheaded maneuver just is plain stupid.

Ayatollah Komen-y!

It strikes me that Komen, which is basically a GOP charity, giving to PP for breast cancer screening was UNITING the nation. Now they're DIVIDING.

So STFU Willard & Newton.

Any time the head of an organization makes a statement about a current event and refuses to actually reference said event in their statement, it always comes across--to me at least--as deceptive or obfuscating.

According to HuffPo, Komen also gives grant money to Penn State. In violation of this policy: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/02…

@12: Both Yale cancer researchers and National Cancer Institute researchers use stem cells in their cancer research. I don't know whether the teams that Komen funds are among them, however.

Have to say I'm kind of enjoying this moment. For the last several years I've been growing increasingly distrustful of Komen due to (as Teslick) notes the extremely high rates of overhead and the apparently tiny amounts that actually go to research. But this PR disaster just pegs the disgusto-meter.

Stem cells are very important in bone-marrow and blood cancer treatments.

Not funding Stem cell research for oncology treatment, is beyond stupid. To say that it isn’t a political decision not to fund stem cell research for oncological purposes, doesn’t pass the smell test. It is bullshit. The Komen Foundation is obviously becoming a very political organization if they are screening their grants to comply with right to lifers..

What I think will happened is that Karen Handel will have to resign, and if she doesn’t, Komen’s fundraising will drop considerably. They damaged their brand, but it is incredulous for them not to fund stem cell research..

Not to flog a dead horse, but if we had Improved Medicare For All (HR 676) nationally, or even just the Washington Health Security Trust locally, poor women wouldn't need to depend on the whims of charity to get breast cancer screening (or treatment).

Think PPACA (ObamaCare) is going to do the trick? Think again. The Obama administration is responding to business and insurance interests and setting the essential benefits package at the lowest possible level -- skeleton small-employer coverage. But all preventive care will be free, you say? Here's how it's working in practice:

Preventive care: It's free, except when it's not
http://medicalxpress.com/news/2011-12-fr…

For what we're paying now, we could provide first-class coverage for everyone, with no co-pays or deductibles (HR 676). Instead, we're going to be spending at least 2% of GDP more and leaving at least 23 million completely uninsured and additional tens of millions with only 60% coverage for the developed world's most limited, most expensive package of procedures. If we simply copied France's functional single-payer system (which isn't as efficient as HR 676) wholesale, we would save $1 trillion a year on healthcare. No wonder pharma and insurance stocks went up when ObamaCare passed; Congress gave them a thousand percent payoff on their lobbying investment.
