Yet another great clip from last night. This one begins with Senator Don Benton (R-17) promoting an unfriendly amendment to the marriage bill that would have immediately put the bill up for a vote of the people. After Benton launches into a rambling discourse on how gay people are only .5 percent of the population—and therefore it should be fine to put their rights up for a vote of the people, and also something about the laws of gravity—Senator Ed Murray (D-43) rises to remind Senator Benton what representative democracy is all about:

I was one of the folks who couldn't watch last night's festivities, and Sen. Murray's speech (and Sen. Pflug's) was one of the main ones I wanted to hear...

So, he says that it's not a significant change because it only effects .5% of the population, but it's such a significant change that it needs to be a referendum for everyone in the whole state to vote?

Benton's speech brought out a lot of fury in the overflow room at the capitol last night. What a condescending bastard.

Is it just me, or does he look like he should be holding a big white cat?

It's so important that we have to vote on it, but feel good about voting it down because it only affects a few isolated perverts anyway.

If marriage exists without legislation, then repeal all the State's marriage legislation and the rights and responsibilities that go with it, and see where common law marriage gets you.
