Rosebud's Replacement

Posted by on Thu, Feb 2, 2012 at 12:49 PM

The space that used to be the Rosebud Restaurant and Bar, my favorite drinking hole for so many years (I finished two scripts there), is going to filled by this...

I only hope they open the outdoor area in the back. I miss that leafy tree in the back. I also miss the bathrooms. However, I very much doubt they will repeat the Rosebud by playing jazz from the moment that means everything to me: 1947 to 1969.

Should that be "two scripts?"

As a tenet of the apartment directly above, the back patio (including your leafy tree) will again be open. They have added two large bathrooms and opened the space up more, and insulated the shit out of the ceiling (good for me). It's going to be great!

I've been listening to Kenny Dorham and Horace Silver lately, Charles. Know them? Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones? I would kill for a bar that played nothing but postwar cool, latin, hard bop and soul jazz that was anywhere near me. Fat chance. All the hipsters seem to want The Worst Of The Eighties these days.

also Philly Joe Jones. Howard Rumsey, Harold Land, Shelly Manne and His Men, Sonny Stitt, and dozens of other non-famous jazz guys, all found on YouTube now. Certainly no one like them is found at Jazz Alley

The people behind the renovated "Rosebud" are the same folks who own/operate "Solo" on lower Queen Anne. For reasons of location, staff and clientele, Solo has been my favorite Seattle bar for nearly as long as it's existed.

Now I will have another reason to trek on over to Capitol Hill besides the live performances that often compel my visits to the neighborhood.

Considering Solo's reputation as Queen Anne's semi-official "theatre bar", I wonder if St. James will finally give thespians an anchor location on The Hill (Rosebud was probably as close as we've ever had, although Vermillion has been making a pretty good go of it in the meanwhile).

I sure hope so, Comte. The after-show theatre, ballet & circus performers who've made Solo their watering hole is one of the main reasons I hang out there myself.

Personally, I believe St. John's is going to be very special.
