Don Cornelius' Golden Years

Posted by on Wed, Feb 1, 2012 at 8:02 AM

Why did I think Don Cornelius was immortal? Why did I think he would live for a 1000 years?

Well, he might have lived a lot longer if he hadn't blown his fucking brains out.

@1, hey, hey, hey...how about a tiny little moment of respect.

Thanks for the vid, Charles. Made my morning...

@2, I'm usually the first guy here telling people not to be snarky about somebody dying. But a guy who kills himself doesn't get much sympathy from me.

Why did I ever think that Soul Train performers weren't lip-synching?

Why did I ever forget that there was a time when a room full of black Americans would groove to a Bowie song?

#1,3 - what kind of fucking moster are you to ignore the incredible pain and despair that leads some to end their own lives? Save your knife-twisting scorn for those who take the lives of others, you heartless prick.

RIP, Don. It's. Damn shame that you never succeeded in bringing back the Natural.

Charles,
I just read the story in the NYT. I remember watching him as a teen in Chicago where he was based many years. I can't forget that 'Fro.

Don Cornelius RIP.

As a child of the '60's, reared in the pre-MTV decades, "American Bandstand" & "Soul Train" were my window into the magical world of popular music; "AB" of course for the mainstream whiter-than-Wonder-Bread brand; and "ST" for a glimpse into an even more mysterious world where a whole different group of people, who clearly did not exist in my ethnically isolated suburban/exurban PDX bubble, shaked their groove things to music that I simple didn't hear anywhere else.

And my God, that voice - deep, resonant, slipping out of the TV speaker like silk spread on silver, I'll never forget that.

Thanks D.C., for introducing this little white kid to Soul, R&B, Funk, Jazz, and yes even early Disco, long before the cheesy M.O.R. Top-40 A.M. stations where I lived would even touch it.

@3, from one moster to another I don't disagree with you a bit. Survive a few dear ones killing themselves--not the "death with dignity" kind but the "endgame of massive self-absorption and/or mental illness/alcoholism/drug abuse" kind--and the glamor disappears right quick. It's possible the great Don Cornelius, hero of many a Saturday afternoon, deserves my every sympathy, but I'll have to wait for some details to see - the mere fact of him making a mess of his brains for public servants to find does not trigger my kind thoughts just yet. I prefer to keep my feet on the ground about suicides, and my heart open wide to those who struggle to avoid joining them.

Someone should write a book called "The one white chick dancing on Soul Train".

DC, you always came correct. Thank you for the sounds. May you find eternal peace, across 110th street...

Thanks, Gus; you expressed my exact thoughts more eloquently than I did. And yeah, I've been the one who had to discover, if not clean up, the mess on more than a few occasions.

@5280 why am I surprised that a number of people whom you've encountered ultimately committed suicide?

@13, he was a cop. It was his job to go to the scene after suicides. You're a real sweetheart, ain't ya?

@1,3&12 Does that lack of sympathy extend to your cop buddies? After all, they've been known to snack on a revolver much more often than civilians.

Some people seem to take pleasure in opportunities to spread negative thoughts and ideas even in tragic situations. Their comments serve no purpose except to inflame others and show how cold hearted they can be. Something is definently wrong in their lives or their head. Pray for them. Somethings are better left unsaid. Everyone knows how Don Cornelius died. It does not change the fact that he was admired by many.
