Music / Nightlife / Books Today Is the Last Day of January, Which Means Tomorrow's the First Wednesday of the February, Which Means It's Time Again for the Reading Party!!

This month we're doing a theater theme, with special guests David Schmader and Sarah Rudinoff. As always, they will just sit there and read whatever they like, silently, to themselves, just like you, while Kyle O'Quin plays classical music on the piano.

Schmader is The Stranger's longtime Last Days columnist and a theater-maker whose new show, A Short-Term Solution to a Long-Term Problem, closes this weekend at Richard Hugo House (click here to get tickets). Rudinoff is a Genius Award-winning actress currently in rehearsals for a new thriller written by Keri Healey called Torso, which runs March 9-March 31 at Theatre Off Jackson.

The silent-reading party happens in the Fireside Room at the Sorrento Hotel, it starts at 6 pm, it's all ages, it's free, and the drink special is a $5 Manhattan. More on how weirdly fun it is right here.

So spend the morning in Olympia watching the senate vote on my personal life, and get back to Seattle in time for the reading party. Sounds like a plan, but I'm still trying to find someone going to Olympia I can ride with.

I'm a big fan of the reading party - but have we ever gotten an explanation on why there are special guests? The guests themselves are worthy people, but promoting a reading party with local "celebs" just seems kinda douchey, like having a Kardashian drop by your bar to make sure people know it's the place to be (although now it sounds like promoters are paying Kardashians to stay away, hmmm).

@2 Just cuz it's funny to have a special guest come and do nothing and cuz it's fun to see what people whose work you admire read on their off-time.
