This applies to every subculture & minority group in the country. Religious bigots/GOP will work against progress while claiming they want to help and that they're not bigots. What they mean is this: "We love everybody... as long as they talk, act & believe exactly the way we do." That's why they think of themselves as loving, non-racists.

No. No, I don't think they actually do want us to live long and healthy lives. I think what they are doing here is trying to use us to prove a religious point: that 'the wages of sin is death'. Literally. If we would only stop sinning and be washed clean of our sins, we would have longer lives. So they believe.
They want to belabour this point to keep their own gay people frightened and closeted. I honestly believe that a lot of unloving people remain nominally 'Christian' simply because they are afraid of burning in hell for eternity. It's a tried and tested means of getting people to toe the religious line. This is just an extension of that policy.

The lifespan argument always makes me laugh. It's countered with a simple thought exercise. Assume that scientists discovered that "the average homosexual" dies at age 142. Would these people then turn around and announce that straight marriages should be nullified? Would they go gay for the health benefits? Of course not, because a) average lifespan is a terrible argument for making policy, b) sexual orientation isn't something you choose, and c) science has no real bearing in their thinking anyway.

@34: There is no proven cause of homosexuality, biological or otherwise. The evidence we have suggests that the cause is biological in nature, however, due to the deep-seated physiological differences in homosexual and heterosexual brain structure. You don't understand how science processes and handles ideas, do you.
Also, the CDC's idea of a responsible sexual lifestyle is wrapping your shaft and getting tested regularly. Dan and pretty much every other sex advice columnist recommend similar.

Why make life Hell for people who are going to go there anyway? It's an especially tricky issue for those who believe in predestination, as most evangelical Protestants do, but here is what I think it is:
* Bully people enough, and they might change their minds---and remember, these people think that gay people can change over, or at least be celibate.
* For those who believe in faith&works-based salvation, bullying might provide an incentive not to do that which would in fact send them to Hell.
* 'People doing Bad Things' causes fires, floods, earthquakes, and terrorism because 1.) either this is a law of Nature or 2.) They make God remove his Gardol (r) Shield from America; in either event, it means that other persons have a very practical interest in no-one else's doing those Bad Things.
*'People doing Bad Things' and _not_ living bad lives sends the wrong message----«Dans ce pays il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres.» It also means that anyone doing these Bad Things and not suffering thereby is a Lying Fact, just like those fossils.
*Some might interpret the charge to spread the Gospel continually and everywhere to be a call to promote all the ideas associated with their particular version of Christianity.
