All Those Black People Look Alike

Posted by on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 8:51 AM

By all accounts, Newt Gingrich is about to lose in Florida, and big. So looking back, how did Gingrich manage to pull off such a stunning victory in South Carolina?

In South Carolina, voters said Gingrich spoke to their conservative heart. Romney advisers say the 22-point switch in polls in the state took place after Gingrich's extended tussle with Juan Williams over racial sensitivity. "Williams was a stand-in for Barack Obama in people's minds," said one Romney adviser.

Uh-huh.

That's certainly believable, but so is the notion that Williams represented that "liberal media," even if Williams himself was a darling for the right because of his NPR departure.

If only he'd been Jewish, too. The Newt would have gotten all the votes then.

I would guess that South Carolina Republicans are more racist than Florida Republicans.

South Florida has most of the population and isn't as receptive to Newt's neo-Confederate demagoguery. Gingrich will do well in the panhandle, and in other Deep Southern states.

You (almost) have to hand it to Romney and his advisers -- between this and the tone deaf things Romney says money -- they say things out loud that most idiots in their position don't and really cut through their bullshit. But they only do it not to make some sort of ideological point but because they're idiots.

It's true; Newt will do OK in the Deep South. Florida, though, is more like the rest of the country (while being absolutely unlike the rest of the country as well), and his bullshit won't fly there, or in the country as a whole. Also, don't forget the important upcoming states where Gingrich isn't even on the ballot. Romney, as he was six months ago and a year ago and a month ago, is the nominee. The only person who thinks Gingrich is going to win is Will in Seattle, who has been tweeting that if Romney doesn't win Florida by a 4-to-1 margin his campaign is over.
