I'm Starting to Feel Sorry for Newt Gingrich

Posted by on Mon, Jan 30, 2012 at 2:21 PM

Mitt Romney's team is devoted to crushing Newt Gingrich and making him completely unmarketable as a candidate after tomorrow's Florida primary:

"It's not about winning here anymore," one Romney staffer told BuzzFeed. "It's about destroying Gingrich — and it's working."

After two standout debate performances that put him up 9 points in recent polls, Romney is keeping the pressure on Gingrich, looking to score a blow-out victory of his own here.

Gingrich says he's staying in until the convention no matter what happens, but he doesn't really have much of a chance at scoring a solid win until Tennessee and Georgia vote in Super Tuesday, which takes place in early March. That's a long time to fundraise with a huge defeat in your recent history. Romney is throwing enough shit at Gingrich to ensure that he'll never get clean. Right now, it's looking like the Gingrich campaign will be a cinder once the Florida votes are counted.

I guess maybe it's working in Florida, but strangely I'm not feeling the spillover outside of that race.

Still, I think this is do or die...Florida is about as representative of metro America as you can get...the losers should all drop out after Florida.

An important note on the Newt:

Back in 1995, it was Newt Gingrich's Contract On America congress which passed that Private Securities Litigation Reform Act which made it much more difficult to sue companies for securities' fraud.

Jump forward to 2002, and S&P (Standard & Poor rating agency) refuses to rate mortgage securities in Georgia and New Jersey (and later threatens several more states for the OCC), because those two states had passed anti-predatory lending laws, and thusly dries up their housing credit.

Subsequently, their state legislatures gutted the bills, and S&P resumed rating their bonds.

Note what has been going on with S&P rating sovereign debt over in Europe and here in America! Beginning to note a pattern, one hopes.......?

And who owns the S&P? The very same majority shareholders who own JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, BankofAmerica (and McGraw-Hill, their owner of record).

Surprise....surprise....!!!

Of course Gingrich has gone from calling Romney a moderate to calling him a pro-abortion, pro-gay rights liberal, so Newt is clearly desperate and trying to respond in kind.

As long as he fights on to the bitter, bitter end that's all that matters. Newt will not go quietly.

I hope the Dems are taking notes. And it certainly won't hurt to attack Romney from the right.

I know it was meant in jest, but I'd be amazed if anyone, ever felt sorry for a Narcissistic Personality Disorder case like Gingrich. He absolutely embodies the delusional, self-interested entitled and opportunistic politician, and ramps the narcissism, backstabbing, and insincerity up as far as it can go.

@6 And that's different from Romney...how?

Romney didn't shut down Congress because he felt snubbed over his Air Force One seat.

@7 NPD involves a "personality", which disqualifies Mitt.

I'm not enough of a politics nerd to answer this question, so I hope one of you here can. Was there ever any chance that Mitt wouldn't get the nomination? I mean, before this week, in Newt's honeymoon after South Carolina, was there ever a possibility that he could dislodge Romney as the actual frontrunner?

Is there a possible scenario that Newt and Mitt take each other out, leaving the possibility of Santorum and/or Paul getting the nomination? (Not that I prefer Santotum of Paul, but... fuck, I prefer Santorum or Paul.)

Or is it just that Mitt has so much fucking money, he can just outspend everyone and wait them out?

Also, I got myself thinking: it pains me to say this, but am I the only one who thinks that Paul and Santorum are much more preferred to these two jokers? And that either of them would be a "better" nominee? (DISCLAIMER: I think Santorum's positions are COMPLETELY fucked up and he's an abomination to society, but at least he's nice, genuine and up-front about his fucked-up views. I also think that 95% of Paul's ideas are completely whacky fucked-up shit, but again, at least he's sincere and up-front about them. Unlike Mitt and Newt, who now everyone knows both are two-faced hypocritical political slimballs, etc etc.

Just some thoughts...

Last time I checked,Mitt still had a natural cap of 25 percent in actual turnout votes.

If he doesn't beat Newt by at least 12-14 points he won't make it to the end.

@11 To answer your first question: NO. Short of a sex scandal, Mitt was always going to be the nominee.
The GOP has a well established pecking order for the nomination, and Mitt's number was up. What you are seeing is the quadrennial hazing ritual of political hacks and campaign reporters, not a genuine contest.
