Posted by on Sun, Jan 29, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Were you born that way? Frank Bruni with a sensible take on a big question.

He makes a good point, because skin color is not a choice, does not remove racial bigotry. People will hate. So too with being Gay. Regardless of it's origin(s), people will hate.

Bruni's writing has an authentic warmth most pundits at his level of acuity can only pretend to. Such a treat to watch him get better and better over the last decade or so. Thanks for the link.

There are two kinds of gay people. Those that hide the fact and those who welcome it. That's the only choice involved.

There are two kinds of gay people. Those that admit (to the world and themselves...) that it is a choice and those who try to deny it. That's the choice involved.

"Our laws safeguard religious freedom, and that’s not because there’s a Presbyterian, Buddhist or Mormon gene. There’s only a tradition and theology that you elect or decline to follow. But this country has deemed worshiping in a way that feels consonant with who you are to be essential to a person’s humanity. So it’s protected......"

Comparing homosexuality to religion is much more apt than comparing it to race.

And just like we don't allow RLDS to redefine marriage we don't have to allow Humanist Homosexuals to redefine it, either.

And, just as we don't allow Baptists to come into the public schools and brainwash students we should not allow homosexuals to get their perverted deviant hands on the school curriculum.

Danny and the FanBoys want to claim that Homosexuality is innate.

But; "The exact dynamics through which someone winds up gay are “still an open question,” said Clinton Anderson, the director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns Office of the American Psychological Association. “There is substantial evidence of various connections between genes, brain, hormones and sexual identity,” he said. “But those do not amount to a simple picture that A leads to B.”

(btw, psychopaths also exhibit various connections between genes, brain and hormones... )

HomoLiberals are so fond of science.

Except when it doesn't suit their world view.....

Homo sapiens reproduce heterosexually.

Were homosexuality an innate biological trait it would be a severe genetic defect that renders those afflicted with it unable to reproduce.

Luckily it is just a behavior choice.......

Excellent. I'm an out bi woman, but I definitely censor myself in expressing any doubts about the "100% immutable sexual orientation" viewpoint because I think it would be considered heretical. For myself, I know there were a number of factors that contributed to my sexual orientation -- I'm pretty sure I wasn't stamped with a "2" on the Kinsey scale when I was born.

and i'm so glad that this one is getting recognized: the religion that one practices is a choice as well. and THAT choice is one of the most protected rights in this country.
for a whole bunch o people being gay is not a choice. but there's nothing wrong with sexual orientation being a "choice" (or environmentally or experientially determined or whatever).
"born this way" not only isn't the strongest argument but it also isn't inclusive.

Oh look, Alleged wants to play geneticist/neurologist. Pretty bold for a know-nothing tosser like him.
@7: learn2differentiate between "innate biological trait" and "dominant deleterious mutation".

Clinton Anderson, the director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns Office of the American Psychological Association, says a scientifically proven biological cause of homosexuality does not exist.

Is Clinton wrong?

Does Clinton, like the CDC, just not know as much about homosexuality as a straight boy like you does?

@11: There is no PROVEN cause of homosexuality yet known to science. Fortunately, the evidence we do have supports the hypothesis that sexual orientation is biologically determined at an early stage of development.
Your point, bitch?

well, if it is biologic then maybe that would be fortunate because they might be able to develop a cure.

I'm not a fan of comparing human sexuality to religion. Religion is delusion at best and poisonous at worst. Not exactly a favourable point of reference.

I'm sorry for coming in late, but the truth behind it, is it relevant? The proof available is that for some wierd reason people tend to have problems "stop being gay". Its wierd but looking at the success rates of exit-groups like the ones you guys have in the US seems to point to one big-ass-obvious conclusion: whether its hereditary or nurture, suicides seems more common than "success" for the "just stop" crowd. (the fact that they are allowed to go on with their treatment is just too damn strange for words)

I wonder if Marcus, Freak, Alleged (whatever the poor boys name is) will ever come around to prove his theory by switching sides for a few years. C'mon son, I'll even buy you a drink first - you'll never get an offer like that... again... by anyone... So less takkitatakkita-more hitting the gay bars.

So this article is in response to a bi woman that doesn't care for the label "bi". Interesting ideas but the gensis event didn't really warrant news.

If America is about Freedom, then perhaps freedom of person choice and freedom of expression and freedom of experience are also key values. Again, if no one is being injured, why is it an issue in a democratic society?
