Jon Stewart on Gingrich's Space Plans

Posted by on Fri, Jan 27, 2012 at 10:48 AM

Sorry, this is the third Daily Show clip in three days—but it can't be helped. His best Gingrich joke yet is at the end of this clip.

People should be embarrassed to make fun of this.

It is a good intelligent idea, the kind that could spur 21st century thinking.

The fact that so called smart people mock it is why the debate always devolves to moronism.

SLOG should know better.

@2, so, why do YOU always devolve to moronism?

You think a 51st State on the moon is "a good, intelligent idea".

My vision for many decades is that instead of the UN, or launching proxy wars, we should allow other nations to become part of the United States. So instead of joining EU and using the euro funny money, a place like say, Croatia, could be the 52nd state (after Tranquility Base).

@2 It's 20th C. thinking. If there was anything to gain, we'd already be there.

Funny thing is, you're participating right now in "21st C. thinking." It's called the internet.

Damn, but that idea drips w/ ignorance, entitlement, arrogance and ethnocentrism. What do you think spurred on the imperialism of the 19th C? Just what you're proposing. And guess what? It doesn't work.

The thing is, if we don't do it, China will. It might be a good alternative to satellites and it might also have mineral and energy potential. And it could be weaponized. People poopooed the ideal of going to the moon in the first place. Now our telephones have more computer power than the Apollo spacecraft did.

@2 Hell, why pretend to be realistic at all? We'll have a moon colony by his first year i'm sure. we'll name it Gingrich, after that bold, daring visionary. And by his second term, everyone will get their own lifelike robotic sex doll. And we'll have longer recess too!

I'm conflicted.

On the one hand, I feel like a lunar colony and mining operation is a step in the right direction.

On the other, fuck if I trust Gingrich to deliver.

W. promised us Mars, remember.

@5: You're CLEARLY some sort of world-government-seeking commie. You want the entire solar system to be run by one country? PINKO!
