Starbucks Endorses Gay Marriage

Posted by on Wed, Jan 25, 2012 at 3:55 PM

Apparently we didn't drink enough coffee this morning because this hasn't been on Slog...

Starbucks, Google, Alcoa and tons of small businesses have come out for the marriage-equality legislation in Olympia, according to a delightful announcement this morning from Washington United for Marriage. "This important legislation is aligned with Starbucks business practices and upholds our belief in the equal treatment of partners," Starbucks executive Kalen Holmes wrote in an email to company staff. (The Seattle Times posted the full letter here). "We look forward to seeing this legislation enacted into law." Starbucks also backed the domestic-partnership law in 2009.

Today's announcement comes after last week's news that Microsoft, Vulcan, and other local industry giants support the state's marriage equality bills.

A full list of the gay-marriage-backing businesses—where you should spend all your money until the election—is after the jump.

Anyone else think it's weird that only one of Linda Derschang's bars (King's Hardware) supports this?

Has Boeing ever taken a stance on this issue? Do they throw their name behind issues that much?

No Amazon.com is weird but not that weird because Bezos sucks so much.

For Silicon Valley companies with large Seattle offices, we get Google but don't get Facebook? Huh?

As noted above no Boeing; but also no Alaska Airlines, which surprises me.

Go Boo Radley's - one of the best things in Spokane. Everytime I go home to visit, I try and stop in and buy something.

Also, in before SB assholishly thanks everyone on SLOG for letting him know what civilization destroying
businesses to boycott and then plays the victim by whining a lot about his special rights.

Supreme Ruler Of The Universe 14

This is really got to raise a lot of cognitive dissonance among Washington State Republicans. How can they push the role models of local successful corporations and Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos and Harold Schultz when these people (to use Romney's denotation) are all supporting a critical issue 180 degrees away from their own petition?

Are they going to eschew local big business altogether?

They are either going to have be hypocrites and take their money, and praise them in public but damn them in private, or else break away from the whole business and Free Market meme...Newt Gingrich might be heading in that direction.

Curious.

What keeps things fresh for me and the caramel macchiatos is I dive into 'em only once or twice a year (on my trips out of the sticks). I pity all of you with your daily ball-and-chains.

Here's lookin' at you, lid.

@16 Why not both?

On another note, I hate it when Starbucks does something that demands my respect. Damn them.
