No nominations for Tilda Swinton, Drive or 50/50!

GFY Oscar.

Maybe I'll root for Moneyball?

I'd root for Hugo, but the blue/orange dichotomy was almost eye-gougingly intolerable (there's a good movie behind the color...but the color...).

The rest were average to terrible.

No Michael Fassbender or anything for Melancholia? Lame. However, I am excited for Melissa McCarthy's nomination.

@ 7, I did not know that. The award is limited to three recipients? Seems unfair.

Charlize Theron was robbed of a Best Actress nom! I suspected she would be hampered because it was a dark comedy and her character was so unlikeable (and she wasn't playing a REAL PERSON which instantly ups your chances) but she deserved it more than at least two of the nominees in the five!

1. ELAIC is there just to remind us about how, if you're influential enough you can buy 291 first place votes and score a best picture nomination?

2. flight of the concords has 50:50 odds at winning an oscar since, somehow, only two original songs qualified for nominations?

#7 Me three. Gary Oldman gave the best performance I've seen this year (outside of the guys in Weekend...). It's incredibly hard for an actor to give a quiet, restrained performance and still carry the screen. He was magnificent.

Could he really win? I'm very, very bad at making these predictions...

I am happy about Oldman. Of course, his performance wouldn't have been so perfectly framed without the restrained direction, so there seems to be an oversight.

It seems to me that Drive got the Fight Club treatment--the Academy can't be seen as advocating for a piece of nakedly nihilistic popular entertainment except by acknowledging its technical achievements. Seems like the cinematography, at least, should have been acknowledged (especially since I doubt there's a Janusz Kaminsi trick we haven't already seen), though. And frankly, I'd love to see Albert Brooks up there. I mean, who would have thought he could convey menace?

They passed a rule a couple of years ago - after two or more songs from a single film where becoming SOP starting with (I think) Enchanted - no more than two from any one picture. Since there aren't really any musicals anymore...other than animated features, the list of eligible songs has dwindled. And frankly, some of the nominees in the recent past? They were stretching to make a five nominee roster, IMHO.

Here's the rule:

Only two songs may be nominated from any one film. If more than two songs from a film are in contention, the two songs with the most votes will be the nominees.

The Producers' Guild Award was given out this past weekend. It gives a foretelling of the Best Picture Oscar and it went to The Artist. I really don't get it, but there's much I don't get these days.

also...original songs played during opening or closing credits are eligible, but there doesn't seem to be much emphasis on that today. Now you see a lot of movies opening and closing with just music (no words). Too bad. Historically, there have been some wonderful standards coming from film. Are people out of ideas? Where are the new Bergmans, Mandels, Mercers, LeGrandes?
