Tokyo's Big One

Posted by on Mon, Jan 23, 2012 at 8:01 AM

Last year's earthquake was not enough:

The team, from the University of Tokyo, said there was a 75% probability that a magnitude 7 quake would strike the region in the next four years.

The government says the chances of such an event are 70% in the next 30 years.

The warning comes less than a year after a massive earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's north-eastern coast.

The last time Tokyo was hit by a big earthquake was in 1923, when a 7.9 magnitude quake killed more than 100,000 people, many of them in fires

But there is no place on earth a person can live in peace. Life is always next to some kind of ticking bomb.

ticking time bomb? boring.

more like: humans are effortlessly dwarfed by nature anywhere they go on the planet -- and we tend to forget that.

The Japanese are better prepared for earthuakes than we are. Which is not very comforting.

@3: Not really - only on the eastern plains. No, the worst you really have to worry about here is a bad snowstorm.

And even then, Colorado tornadoes are very rarely big and powerful. It does happen, but not like in the midwestern or gulf regions.

I'm sure someone in Japan is reading about Mt Rainier and the potential for it to go boom and flood half the area in a sea of boiling mud. ...or they're reading about the republican primaries and getting really scared.
